Unique accommodation experienced in an enchanting tower at a vibrant arts centre in the Karoo village of Nieu Bethesda. The Bethesda Arts Centre Tower is located two minutes' walk from the fascinating Owl House, surrounded by stunning mountains, under an amazing array of stars. See the artists at work making huge colourful wall hangings and lino-prints, or catch a performance at the outdoor theatre while enjoying a Karoo-style meal at our great restaurant. The Tower is a fairytale building three stories high.  On the top floor is a huge round bed, covered with a 'love quilt' made at the project.  The middle room has twin beds, so Bethesda Tower is ideal for a couple wanting a romantic night, or an adventurous family wanting a completely unique experience.  There are wonderful views of the surrounding hills from the Tower balcony, and at night you can sit and sip your wine under the stars in the round stone courtyard, in privacy and complete safety.  Delicious meals are served in the Arts Centre's restaurant-gallery, where you can browse the exquisite bags, cushion covers, wall hangings, and prints made at the centre, or chat to the artists while you wait for a fine meal prepared from local produce in the Tower kitchen. The Priory is named after the Priory in England where its stunning 1820 stained-glass windows came from. It sleeps a maximum of seven people, with the beds covered in quilts and the walls covered with artwork both made at the centre.  A beautiful stone courtyard with its own barbecue area offers privacy in a charming outdoor setting. Here you can gaze at the famous Bethesda night sky while you sip your wine. Nights spent in the centre's friendly and quirky accommodation will not only give you the chance to meet the local artists, but to know that you are supporting a worthwhile project that is changing people's lives.

Angler’s Paradise is situated in the Eastern Cape, on the fabled Garden Route, with beauty on all sides. To the south there is 900 m of private unspoiled coastline, and to the north are the spectacular Tsitsikamma Mountains. Just 14 km from Angler’s Paradise you can access the famed Karoo via the well-known R62 Wine Route, and a mere 50 km away you will find the Tsitsikamma National Park and the Storms River Mouth, where you can enjoy more vigorous activities such as hiking, rock climbing, and bungee jumping. Angler’s Paradise offers a personal touch, with magnificent views of the coast, and is arguably situated on the most impressive and privately owned coastal site in the Tsitsikamma. The two houses have unfettered vistas of the wild ocean and are surrounded by forested kloofs, fynbos, pastures, and mountains. Angler’s Paradise is extremely private and tranquil, with no other developments within a 25 km radius, excluding rural farming facilities. There is a choice of a fireplace in the one house, or an indoor braai in the other house, and while on holiday there is no need to miss out on sport or perhaps a favourite programme, as a full DStv bouquet is available. A home executive also services the houses on request. With seven private bass dams, you can be sure of a good day’s fly-fishing – the ultimate freshwater fishing experience. Your fishing experience can further be enhanced with sea fishing and rock-angling from the unspoiled coastline on your front door, or deep-sea fishing launching from the nearby world-famous Cape St Francis Bay. For the not-so-active among us, whale-watching is a firm favourite, with dolphins and other mammals vying for your attention. Settling down for the evening will afford you with unencumbered ocean vistas, catering for the discerning photographer. Should you be interested in other activities, you can sunbathe on the sheltered private beach, or swim in the beautiful rock pools. There are also several walks and trails to explore, which include a walk to the river in the kloof adjacent to Angler’s Paradise, or a walk along the rocks where one can have excellent sightings of not only dolphins and whales, but also of the resident Cape Clawless Otter. Guests will also have access to miles of quiet rolling farm roads which are ideal for mountain bikers.

Eastern Cape South Africa

Eastern Cape Accommodation

The Eastern Cape is South Africa's second largest and most diverse province. It's a great sun, sand and sea destination with a coastline that runs from temperate rocky shores in the south to sub-tropical beaches in the north. There is a beach for every reason - from highly developed urban playgrounds to wild and untamed stretches of wave-washed sand. It has some of the best surf in the country - make that some of the best surf in the world. The small towns of Jeffreys Bay and St Francis Bay are renowned and very popular surf destinations and the Wild Coast has some legendary (and mostly secret) breaks.

The Eastern Cape is not classic lowveld, which is the vegetation type found around the Kruger National Park and is most usually associated with big game. However, this province has some awesome safari destinations. The Greater Addo Elephant National Park, near the town of Addo, conserves a staggering diversity of plant and animal life. There are a number of private game lodges, both in the national park and in surrounding private reserves. Best of all - it's totally malaria-free. South Africa's first and - to date - only serious commercial ski resort is in the high-lying northern part of the Eastern Cape. OK, it's not exactly Chamonix or Aspen - but it is skiing in Africa. Snowboarding's big, too.

The Eastern Cape's cultural heritage is particularly varied and interesting, and there are so many interpretive tours, museums and monuments, you'll never be bored. Towns that will particularly appeal to more culturally minded visitors include Graaff-Reinet and Grahamstown.

Nieu Bethesda, which is close to Graaff-Reinet, is a funky little village that owes its popularity to the existence of the Owl House, which is South Africa's most well known example of outsider art. Port Elizabeth is renowned for its excellent township and cultural tours. The Nelson Mandela Museum in Umtata is a loving tribute to South Africa's first president. There are great tours along the Wild Coast, on which you get to spend time with the local people and see how they live. The Grahamstown Festival or, more accurately, the National Festival of the Arts, which showcases a huge variety of South Africa's visual and performance arts, is held in Grahamstown at the beginning of July.

There are some excellent golf courses, but they're not all as conveniently close together as they are, for example, on the Garden Route. Some of the better courses are to be found in or near Port Elizabeth, Port Alfred, East London and Port Edward. A brand new golf course has been built at the rather interesting town of Alicedale, which is experiencing a huge economic revival after spending years as a virtual ghost town.

The Eastern Cape is South Africa's second largest and most diverse province. It's a great sun, sand and sea destination with a coastline that runs from temperate rocky shores in the south to sub-tropical beaches in the north. There is...
