This is just perfect for family holidays, romantic retreats from civilization and those looking to escape to the bushveld and enjoy nature at its best. There are no other rental cottages or rondavels on site. The cottage features a large screened verandah, and an open plan lounge kitchen and dining area with all new furnishings. Two chalets overlooking the Olifants River are offered as well as a pool and pool deck with braai facilities, and a lovely outdoor kitchen with an awesome view. We are set within the 1000 ha Ndlovumzi Nature Reserve with giraffe, zebra, kudu, nyala, warthog, eland, water buck, black-backed jackal and more, and there are crocodiles and hippos in the main stream of the Olifants. The adventurous can explore the island, potholes and waterfalls right in front of Little Carthage. The Loft Chalet sleeps four, with a queen-size bed downstairs and a loft bedroom with twin beds. There is a bathroom with a shower. The ladder to the loft is very steep and not suitable for very small children or older folk. There is a kitchenette with a medium fridge, a kettle, and basic cutlery and crockery. The Rondavel sleeps two and is a very basic but neat open-plan room. There is a queen-size bed and a bathroom with a shower that are separated only by a half wall. There is a small bar size fridge and a kettle, but cooking and catering needs to be done in the outside kitchen. It is not available to rent on its own, only for those hiring both the Loft Chalet and the Rondavel together. The pool deck is right on the river with a swimming pool, a braai area and an eight-seater table under shade. The open kitchen has a 10-seater table under thatch, a full size fridge-freezer, a gas oven and stove, a microwave and cutlery and crockery. It's a great getaway for people who love the bush, but please be prepared for the bush. There are geckos, lizards, spiders and the occasional snake, monkeys and baboons. We try not to kill anything except mosquitoes and flies, and so on. Please try and arrive while it is still light, as you have eight kilometers of dirt road and then three and a half kilometers of bush road to negotiate. You don't need a 4x4 but very low cars may battle. Power failures are rare but may happen and are beyond my control. We have a number of alternatives for lighting and cooking in the event of a power failure.

Hoedspruit South Africa

Hoedspruit Self-catering Accommodation

Hoedspruit is a bush town. What that means is that it’s the closest urban centre to a huge number of game lodges, and every second person in town is wearing khaki and driving a big four-by-four. A real, dusty four-by-four, not those shiny urban versions. Hoedspruit is close to the Kruger National Park and a whole lot of private game reserves, so most of the attractions round town are of the safari variety. There is an absolutely superb horseback safari in a Big Five reserve, a great rafting trip on the Olifants River and an elephant-back safari. There are numerous animal breeding and rehabilitation centres around Hoedspruit, which are open to tourists.

A fascinating reptile park offers a look at a whole range of snakes and other creepy crawlies. They even offer a desensitising course for people with snake or spider phobias. There is a silk farm, which you can tour and then buy all manner of indulgent delights. There are some great guest houses and lodges in and around Hoedspruit and the town, although small, has sufficient shops, restaurants and other infrastructure to satisfy most needs.
