About Little Carthage
Three rustic, self-catering chalets overlooking the Olifants River are offered. The Loft chalet and Rondavel are booked as one unit and are located at the pool and pool deck with braai facilities, and a lovely outdoor kitchen which has an awesome view. The River chalet is separate and private with it's own braai facilities and a plunge pool. We are set within the 1000 ha Ndlovumzi Nature Reserve with giraffe, zebra, kudu, nyala, warthog, eland, water buck, black-backed jackal and more, and there are crocodiles and hippos in the main stream of the Olifants. The adventurous can explore the island, potholes and waterfalls right in front of Little Carthage. The pool deck is right on the river with a swimming pool, a braai area and an eight-seater table under shade. The open kitchen has an eight-seater table under thatch, a full size fridge-freezer, a gas oven and stove, a microwave and cutlery and crockery. The Loft Chalet sleeps four, with a queen-size bed downstairs and a loft bedroom with twin beds. There is a bathroom with a shower. The ladder to the loft is very steep and not suitable for very small children or older folk. There is a kitchenette with a medium fridge, a kettle, and basic cutlery and crockery. The Rondavel sleeps two and is a very basic but neat open-plan room. There is a queen-size bed and a bathroom with a shower that are separated only by a half wall. There is a small bar size fridge and a kettle, but cooking and catering needs to be done in the outside kitchen. It is not available to rent on its own, only for those hiring both the Loft Chalet and the Rondavel together. The River cottage is set away from the other two chalets and sleeps 4-8. The main room is open plan with a king size bed and bunk beds. There is an en-suite bathroom, with a shower. It is open and spacious with a large deck overlooking the river. There is a 2nd bedroom with en-suite bathroom and a king size bed attached off the side of the deck, and there are bunk beds on the deck. The unit is semi off-grid - there is a full size electric fridge, a gas oven/stove, hot water donkie and solar lights. It has a kitchenette with basic cutlery and crockery, and it's own braai area. Little Carthage is a great getaway for people who love the bush, but please be prepared for the bush. There are geckos, lizards, spiders and the occasional snake, monkeys and baboons. We try not to kill anything except mosquitoes and flies, and so on. Please try and arrive while it is still light, as you have eight kilometers of dirt road and then three and a half kilometers of bush road to negotiate. You don't need a 4x4 but very low cars may battle. A conservancy levy of R100 is required upon entry to the reserve per car, valid for 7 days. Well behaved and socialised pets welcome by arrangement.
Safari: Ndlovumzi Nature Reserve is a private 1000-hectare game reserve on the Olifants River. It includes game such as giraffe, zebra, kudu, nyala, warthog, eland and waterbuck.
The Rondavel is not available to rent on its own, only for those hiring both the Loft Chalet and the Rondavel together.
