Three hours south of Maputo you will find one of the last places on Earth that can still be considered paradise. Ponta Do Ouro is a place where one can swim with wild dolphins, dive down to reefs from 12 meters to 50 meters packed with sea life, go on nature walks, deep sea fishing, kayaking, kitesurfing and the choice of a busy night life or a quiet night away from it all. Ponta Do Ouro which means 'point of gold', is where our lodge, a mere few minutes' walk from the beach, is situated. We have a luxury bungalow and a selection of lovely bungalows with a queen bed and en-suite toilet and shower, dorm rooms for both small and large groups and there is space for those who want to camp. We guarantee cleanliness and absolute comfort; all rooms have fans and quality mosquito nets. The lodge has a quality restaurant and bar, serving up great food with freshly made bread. We also have a grill for campers who want to do their own cooking. Sheltered behind a hill, the lodge is a mere few minutes' walk from the beach. We are a short way from the bustling city yet close enough to the water, making it the most ideal location.

Nestled amongst a coastal forest high up in the dunes, Island Rock Resort is unequivocally set on the picturesque coast of tropical Mozambique. Endless sun-drenched beaches washed by the warm blue waters of the Indian Ocean, makes Island Rock Resort a true holidaymaker's paradise. Situated some 500 km north of Maputo at Jangamo Beach, just south of Inhambane, Island Rock Resort is aptly named after the huge rock at the end of a massive reef system which extends from the shore. Island Rock Resort offers three main types of accommodation available - Casitas, Lapas, and camping sites. The Casita's are comfortable reed and grass rooms that line the beachfront or are nestled in between the beach dunes, and there are a number of different configurations of Casitas available. All the Casitas have their own kitchen from which to prepare your local seafood dishes, and have a definitive marooned island feel, yet they are very comfortable with the added benefit of being relatively cool in the summer. The Lapas are constructed of brick and mortar and refers to more than one structure that is based in a loose circle. At Island Rock Resort the Lapas have been built with groups and families in mind. Each Lapa is set apart from the camp and nestled between the beach dune and indigenous bush. The Island Rock Resort campsite is well laid out and nestled in the beach dunes along the Inhambane Coast. Each campsite is bordered by the wild indigenous bush with private, semi-private, and communal sites available.

Macachula Beach Camp is an ideal getaway for self-catering, camping, 4x4 and fishing enthusiasts who enjoy adventure, the outdoors and the sea. We are situated on four hectares of a secluded portion of the northern bank of the Pomene Lagoon, 55 km from Massinga. The sea and endless white beaches are 200 m from the camp, directly across the lagoon. The mangrove swamps are easily accessible by boat and can be navigated up to 5 km inland at high tide. The lodge consists of two self-catering chalets, Casa Flamingo and Casa Kingfisher, each with two double en-suite bedrooms, a kitchen and a pantry, a large open-plan lounge area, and braai facilities overlooking the lagoon. There are two double beds with mosquito nets but guests are requested to bring their own linen or sleeping bags, food, drinks and camping fridges. There are also five sleeping lapas each with a double bed and a mosquito net, and two of the lapas are en-suite with a toilet and a shower. The ablution block has hot water and there are two large lapas with kitchen and pantry facilities which may be used by people occupying the sleeping lapas or campers, as long as they are booked. The four camping sites are situated under the trees overlooking the lagoon. Cutlery, crockery and some pots and pans are provided. Solar lighting is provided but guests are advised to bring their own small generators or dual battery systems for camping fridges. We also have two entertainment lapas that have tables, chairs and a kitchen. The camp has a permanent security guard and is fully serviced. Martin, the camp manager, is also based at the camp and will arrange freshly baked Portuguese rolls, fresh vegetables, firewood, and fresh seafood upon request at a reasonable additional charge. Campers must be fully self-sufficient and have access to the ablution block. Water is pumped from the nearby mangrove river and is generally drinkable, especially if used for tea and coffee and cooking. Guests, however, may prefer to bring their own drinking water. The last 5 km of the sand road from Massinga is steep and sandy in parts, especially in dry weather and can be challenging for 4x4s and drivers, especially if you are towing a boat or trailer. However, this is all part of the adventure and the view of the lagoon and sea from the top of the hill when you arrive is well worth it. Please be aware that Pomene is a malaria area and that you are required to take the necessary precautions, prophylactics, and mosquito coils, citronella candles and the like. Paradise Lodge, located within a 10-minute walk along the lagoon, offers a pub, a restaurant and deep sea fishing charters. The nearby Pomene Lodge, five minutes by boat on the lagoon, offers a diving school, a restaurant and pub, a swimming pool, horse riding and quad bike tours. Massinga has a well-stocked market and ice, beer and drinks are available at garages and stores. Otherwise Martin, the camp manager, will advise you. Please note that a detailed information and direction document will be forwarded to guests with confirmed bookings. This is particularly useful if you are a first time traveller in Mozambique or visitor to the Pomene region, and describes useful stop-over points, shopping tips, detailed directions, a Maputo bypass short cut, and what to bring.

Boa Vista is situated just 180 km from Maputo and 60 km from Xai Xai, which makes it an ideal weekend getaway destination. This nice waterfront town, in the old day known as San Martino is located right on the Uembje Lagoon which is 8 km wide and 27 km long with a depth of 50 metres at some places, but very shallow on the sides. The lukewarm lagoon makes it so nice for children to play in and the beautiful white beach makes you think you are in Mauritius, Thailand or Greece but they don’t have the wonderful rolling dunes that we have. It is quiet when it is out of season but busy on school holidays and long weekends. Boa Vista means ‘nice view’ and it has a beautiful view over the lake and has some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. Boa Vista offers ten beautiful grassy campsites with water and electricity, clean ablutions and a relaxing atmosphere. Local pubs and resorts in the area are just a short a walk away. Fresh fish and prawns are available daily from the locals; and if we say fresh we mean still alive. Deep sea fishing and diving can be chartered from other resorts in the area. The Bilene lagoon, Uembje, is a salt water lagoon that runs roughly 27 km parallel to the Indian Ocean. Although the lagoon has a mouth that is always kept open for boat trips, a huge sandbar is what separates the lagoon and ocean. The lagoon's calm waters make it safe for swimming and ideal for a variety of water sports, such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, wake boarding, jet skiing, kayaking and much more. We are a small camping resort but will be building some chalets in the future: We do weddings and birthday parties and also children parties on the beach or on the grounds.

    Mozambique

    Mozambique Camping/Caravanning Accommodation

Mozambique is a gorgeous tropical paradise of a country. The coastline is long, and palm-fringed beaches define lovely bays sheltering colourful coral reefs. But like any paradise – there's the odd rotten apple and even a serpent or two. A hideous twenty-year war when the country was used as a pawn between the superpowers, and neighbouring countries, was followed by devastating cyclones and floods. Mozambique still has a way to go but it's bouncing back. If there was an Oscar ceremony for countries, Mozambique would win the award for resilience and grace under pressure.

The beautiful beaches are fully operational, there are dive operators almost everywhere the reefs are easily accessible, and accommodation options range from backpackers and camping sites to five star extravaganzas. Most of the towns and cities are picking up slowly and there is a certain shabby chic touch to unmaintained Art Deco buildings decaying in style. The streets are lined with flowering trees and vibrant markets and small businesses. The main reasons most people visit Mozambique, though are to dive, fish, sun tan or indulge in yummy seafood. Mozambique is renowned for its succulent swimming prawns – although by the time most people see them they're swimming in peri-peri sauce. (In case you're wondering, swimming prawns are distinct from those rather squooshy things that hide out in the mud – and they taste muucch better.)

Ponta do Ouro and Ponta Malongane, together just called Ponta and just across the border from South Africa, are very popular diving, fishing and surfing resorts. In the 1970s Maputo was the playground of southern Africa – balmy nights, Portuguese wine, prawns by the bucketful and wild Latin-African rhythms made this a party destination of note. It's coming – with a bit more style and a lot more relaxed dress code.

In Maputo Bay is Inhaca Island – a little tropical paradise all of its own. Mangrove forests, lovely beaches, a good hotel, great diving and snorkelling, a small low key marine museum and a small village give it a special holiday air. There are good beach destinations all up the coast, but the more popular areas include the area around Inhambane, the Bazaruto Archipelago and, in the last few years, the far north, near Pemba.
You can drive into Mozambique from South Africa and the roads, while not exactly pristine, are passable in a two-wheel drive vehicle.
