Bilene is Paradise
Bilene is a very small town at the coast of a large shallow and warm Indian ocean lagoon. The lagoon waters is blue with white beach sands. A boat ride from the friendly locals takes you to the lagoon mouth opening into the ocean - awesome sight! The market in Bilene sells everything from sandals, shorts, tropical fruits, fish and beer. The locals are very friendly and eager to help but speak very little English. A visit to Bilene is worth every cent.
Greatly disappointed in the furore made about Bilene. Smelly lagoon, 4x4 or walk. The great white sandy "beach" is unreachable! Do yourself a favour and drive a bit further to the sea. Could've been anywhere (in Africa) if it wasn't for the locals. Very friendly, poor, rural. Visited in July and hot, hot, hot. Lovely. Probably hellish in mid-summer. Roads are s-l-o-w. Too far for what one gets. Sorry Bilene, a big hype about nothing.
Bilene as a destination
Bilene is a beautiful paradise. However, due to extreme pollution of the beaches (bottles, condoms, dirty baby nappies) and abuse of the environment, the only place recommended on the beach is Palmeiras. Bella and Ruiz the owners of Palmeiras have 24 hour security, a clean beach, chalets and surroundings.
