The authentic bushveld character of the area at the foothills of the Swartberg Mountains has been preserved and the lush indigenous vegetation is representative of the Cape Floral Kingdom – South Africa’s sixth Natural World Heritage Site.

Luxury accommodation, a restaurant and conference facilities that meet international standards are available to visitors and corporate guests. A charming wedding chapel at the water’s edge is the ideal setting for romantic African country weddings. A wide variety of game, bird and plant species are indigenous to this area and visitors will see elephant, rhino, buffalo, hippo, Cape mountain zebra, giraffe and other antelope.

The 25 Luxury Tents on the edge of the natural waterhole offer beautiful views of the spacious Klein Karoo landscape. Each has its own wooden deck overlooking the water where guests can relax, admire the view and see the game. Guests and baggage will be transported from the safe parking lot in cute golf carts to their accommodation. The environment is one of quiet solitude that offers peace of mind.

The Buffelsdrift Restaurant offers an à la carte or buffet menu that specializes in local Karoo cuisine, home-made preserves, chutney, pickles fresh produce and herbs from the area, as well as a variety of freshly baked oven bread. The selected wine list is a true representation of excellent South African wine and offers guests some of the best award-winning wines on the R62 - the longest wine route in South Africa. The open-air bar is situated next to the conference venue and is an extension of the wooden deck. The bar offers a variety of soft drinks, spirits and a wide selection of local wine and port.

Take a bush safari in an open game vehicle to a panoramic lookout point where refreshments will be enjoyed while taking in the natural beauty of the environment. Game viewing on horseback is also an option where guests will be escorted by a trained guide to get a closer view of game roaming the vast undulating hills. Walk with an elephant in the late afternoon to the waterhole and see the sun set on the horizon. Elephant feeding offers an opportunity to interact with our elephants and to get to know these gentle giants.
The neighbouring town of Calitzdorp houses three of the top wine estates on the R62, also known as “The Port Capital of the World”. This is not only “Ostrich Country” but also the heart of the Western Cape Winelands.

We offer the Baroness Lodge for accommodation. The lodge was built in 1822 by the Baron von Pletten, an early South African pioneer and conservationist, who used the lodge as his base to explore the diversity and wildlife of the then, untamed, African landscapes. Each of the spacious 10 double suites open out onto the rolling lawns, and the cool interior welcomes guests on the hot African afternoons. The suites have both indoor showers and lounging bathtubs, allowing guests to relax and unwind.

A cooling outdoor pool is available for the exclusive use of the guests or for those who are a little more energetic, a game of croquette on the lawn might be a good laugh. The outside boma is built over a dam and it is a haven for guests to enjoy sundowners and keep an eye on William, the resident hippopotamus. In the distance, the view from the boma is of Plettenberg Bay.

The lodge is located in one of the most beautiful parts of Africa - the Garden Route. All of our 16 Luxury Suites have private decks overlooking these vistas, offering guests relaxed luxury in an unforgettable setting.

Each Suite offers a king-size bed, a fireplace, a hammock and handcrafted artifacts. Guests can sleep comfortably in crisp linen and there is a special turndown each night. On chilly winter nights, we slip a hot water bottle between the sheets just in case the cosy fireplace isn’t enough. Each room is fitted with a minibar and a mini Hi-Fi, but there is no television or telephone. The main house forms a communal dining area leading down to a long, blue swimming pool that visually flows into the valley below. There is also a boma deck where nightly fires are lit.

Hog Hollow Country Lodge is well-known for its delectable food. On crisp and clear days, our farmhouse breakfasts are served on the wooden deck overlooking the forest, or near the huge fireplace on cooler days. In the evenings, guests can enjoy scrumptious candlelit dinners around the communal table. Meals are prepared using only the freshest of local produce. The set menu includes a selection of main course of which fish, prawns and crayfish are daily features. Guests with specific dietary requirements are catered for individually and children receive special mealtimes and menus.

Other attractions include a forest sauna and a privately sited forest shower with incredible views over the valley. Expect outstanding cuisine, numerous activities to suit each guest, and truly memorable hospitality from our team. For the adventurous, the lodge is the perfect base from which to explore and experience numerous adventure activities. We are renowned for our personalized service and we will gladly assist you with the planning and booking of daily excursions. We are conveniently located only 2 and a half hours from Cape Town and a 30 minute drive from picturesque Montagu.
We share our space with a host of animals both big and small. Through careful management of the environment, we are encouraging the return of many endemic species. The reserve has a wealth of bird-life and bio-diversity, offering guests the opportunity to experience the varied yet specialised eco-systems of the Little Karoo.

African Game Lodge is a private conservation area outside Montagu in the Little Karoo, Western Cape dedicated to preserving the rich biodiversity of the area.

The lodge has traditional Karoo thatch chalets with log fires and private braais. Everything is provided, from towels, bath robes, bathroom toiletries, a tea and coffee tray and cleaning materials.

For a truly special back-to-nature experience you can book into a Private Tented Camp for a romantic time together. Full board and solar powered, the old style Leopard Bush Camp has a romantic four-poster bed and an en-suite bathroom with a shower. Wake up to birdsong and sunshine on your balcony as you view the cheetah below.

The Honeymoon Hideaway-Caracal Bush Camp is privately situated in a special wilderness area, complete with sparkling dam. With its hot-shower bathroom, a fully-equipped kitchen, a fire pit and a large viewing and braai deck, you'll be spirited away into another world of nature and romance. Caracal is so special there is even a Caracal shuttle to take you there and fetch you when you're ready.

Relax and enjoy some of Montagu’s finest award-winning wines from the licensed bar while watching the sunset over four thousand hectares of unspoilt flora, fauna and Fynbos. Braai on your stoep while watching the eland go past or share your bread with a friendly ostrich.

Guests can book guided nature and game viewing drives or guided hikes and get close to the indigenous wildlife such as leopard, wildebeest, springbok, kudu, rhebok, steenbok, eland and more. You can also relax at the outdoor pool with a book on nature from the library and make new friends.

Visitors can join in a Cheetah Awareness Program at feeding time, this is included in the booking price.

Photographers dream. 4x4 Enthusiasts will really experience severe 4x4 routes, but the moderate 4x4 driver will also be able to enjoy himself. Swartberg Private Game Lodge is a holiday rental property surrounded by natural beauty and abundant wildlife, just 55 km from Oudtshoorn. Set on a wildlife estate, the malaria- and predator-free environment offers a wonderful opportunity to explore.

The Swartberg Mountains provide a spectacular backdrop to easy game viewing of giraffe, the endangered Cape Mountain zebra, wildebeest and numerous antelope ranging from eland, the largest species in the world, to kudu, nyala, gemsbok, lechwe, springbok, impala and many more.

The Swartberg Mountains have been proclaimed a World Heritage site as part of the Cape Floristic Region, and this area is home to three different biomes, namely Succulent Karoo, Fynbos, and Renosterveld. Bird life is abundant, as are photo opportunities.

The lodge is reflective of the Karoo Colonial farm style and its furnishings are comfortable, but with an air of understated luxury. Accommodation in the rooms is spacious, comfortable and somewhat elegant, with attention paid to the finer details. The rooms' décor draws inspiration from the surrounding flora and fauna, each with its own theme.

Accommodation is on a self-catering basis, with a very well-equipped kitchen and staffed daily. Guests also have the use of a game-viewing Landover, with driver, to be able to explore the estate and view the abundant wildlife.
