Situated on the Plumari Africa Game Reserve in Magaliesberg, just over an hour from Johannesburg or Pretoria, Askari Game Lodge offers guests a memorable Big 5 wildlife experience within a malaria-free environment.

Plumari Africa Game Reserve is set within a pristine wilderness area of over 4000 hectares with natural African bushveld and an abundance of flora, fauna, birdlife, and wildlife. Two game drives, each approximately two to two and a half hours in duration, are scheduled daily. Elephant experiences include bush walks and interaction with our elephants, which include a touch and feed experience.

The main lodge, which is in fact the old Bodenstein family farmhouse, overlooks the Elephant Dam and invites guests to take a step back in time while admiring South African décor pieces dating back to the 1800’s. Slipper baths, a coal stove, wash stands, luggage chests, antique Oregon cupboards and tables are subtly placed within the luxury 4 Star surrounding, to emphasize the captivating history of the Magaliesberg area.

Askari Game Lodge & Spa has one of the largest private collections of ox wagons, carts and other animal-drawn vehicles from the period 1800 to 1900. A variety of stone and iron-age artefacts, items from the Boer War, and San Bushmen rock carvings tell the history of the area, which is also known for the nearby Battle of Nooitgedacht. Examples are available in the museum and guided bush walks take guests through areas where many stone carvings can be found.

In contrast with the rich Boer and Afrikaner history depicted by the main farmhouse decor, the Day Visitors Centre is abundant with African symbolism, rich earthy colours, and unique African décor focal points. The two contrasting décor themes pay homage to the Afrikaner history while highlighting the significant influence of the indigenous African tribes of the area.

Askari Game Lodge & Spa caters for romantic getaways, conferences, team building initiatives, training courses, and weddings in both the main lodge and Day Visitors Centre. Nature lovers and birding enthusiasts will find the experience most rewarding, while stressed city dwellers will leave feeling rejuvenated and well-rested.

Located in the heart of the lodge, the spa complex boasts with an individual treatment room, a couples room with a double outdoor shower and a couples hydrotherapy bath. Separate men's and ladies change rooms each with a unique steam room which opens into one.

The entire spa opens up on outdoor relaxation areas and private gardens. Numerous pathways throughout the beautiful surrounding gardens allow for leisurely walks pre- and post-treatment. The spa also incorporates a Pedicure and Manicure Lounge, juice Bar, swimming pool with day beds and a retail area.

Our core philosophy of natural health is based on nurture, inspiration and the use of mother Earth's ingredients, to provide you with the most invigorating treatments imaginable. For centuries, African women have utilized natural herbal concoctions, creams and oils to enhance natural beauty and to maintain health. Found on our reserve the Wild Olive Tree, Artemisia Afra (Wormwood) and Aloe Vera have been well known for centuries for its healing properties.

We now combine both ancient and contemporary techniques in a natural manner, designed to bring balance and harmony to cater to the needs of every Individual. Soothe away the stress of modern life and dissolve impurities, under the gentle fingers of our therapists. The benefits to body and spirit will be truly rewarding.

De Hoek - the Stone House the only 5 star country house in Magaliesburg, is situated in a unique valley, distinguished by its pocket of indigenous bush, amongst a sprawling farming community and a small but bountiful river.

The house was built 10 years ago, but looks one hundred years old. It was designed for a family who have owned the land for a long time, and wanted to build a family country house at first. The result was a house that perfectly matched the environment and spirit of the family, a traditional design using the 'H' plan of old Cape homesteads, tin roof and stone walls of the Transvaal, Karoo and Free State homes of old.

Stone and timber, with cool dark rooms of elegant proportions, a vast dining room opening onto terraces, East and West, a living room above the entrance leading out to a balcony and bedrooms upstairs in the wings of the house, each with its own special view. 16 beautifully appointed Superior Rooms are situated along the river in North, West and South Quarters.

Building the house entailed collecting beams, doors marble and granite from around the country. American Oregon pine from the old Crown Mines; teak, imbuia and Oregon salvaged from old homes. These elements have been incorporated throughout the house as beams and pillars, flooring and sub-frames, lintels and cornices, doors and cupboards, forming a major part of its texture and style.

The house and garden provide perfectly for entertainment purposes, as well as conference and team building exercises. Different areas of the hotel cater for different occasions: breakfast on the East terrace, or out in the gardens under shady bush-willows, karees and wit stinkhouts; a formal lunch or dinner in the dining room with all the French doors open in Summer, or a roaring fire in Winter.

The unique service at De Hoek has spread steadily by word of mouth. The team comprises of the manager and owner, Michael Holenstein, his wife Michelle, and a complement of excellent staff- Henry, Mathias and Berry, who provide world class service.

Michael Holenstein offers cuisine extraordinaire. Swiss born and trained, he has worked in some of Johannesburg's top restaurants; at the Gleneagles in Scotland, and in his home country - Switzerland. Dinners at De Hoek are refined elegant affairs involving the best of French cuisine with influences of the Mediterranean and Swiss. Michael is passionate about food, and delights guests with his presentation and quality. A good selection of wine is available from our small but well-stocked cellar.

Magaliesburg South Africa

Magaliesburg Accommodation

The Magaliesberg is a beautiful low range of hills not far from the city of Johannesburg and close to the town of Magaliesburg. Note the spelling. Magaliesburg is the town, Magaliesberg is the range. But, hey, what’s in a name? Magaliesberg is a fun little centre with a very countrified feel to it and loads of bucolic pleasures. Pick up a copy of the Magalies Meander map. It’s a snazzy little marketing initiative that has linked together loads of fun products such as guest houses, museums, craft shops, restaurants and attractions as varied as South Africa’s first gold mine, a hot air balloon trip, spas and wellness centres, and a cheese factory. It’s also really close to the fascinating Cradle of Humankind.

Now the Magaliesberg is even more inviting. Although not very high, it’s a beautiful range with lovely flora, some small game and loads of beautiful streams, pools and waterfalls. It’s a real escape from the frenetic urban conurbations of Pretoria and Johannesburg, and it’s hard to believe it’s so close. The hiking is legendary, there are some fun kloofing trips and some good climbing, too. There are horse trails in the area and South Africa’s largest gliding club is situated nearby.
