Central Karoo Travel Guide

The broad, mostly sandy, expanse of undulating plains known as the Karoo is divided between the Little Karoo, nearer the coast and the Great Karoo, which seems to stretch into the interior forever. The Karoo, which means 'great thirst' in the local Khoi-San language, receives little rain so the... Read more

Prince Albert Town of Central Karoo

2 night stay - Had a very good, hot stay. Just sorry there was no water in the tape on the Sunday morning! Very scenic.

Prince Albert Town of Central Karoo

Majestic village - Visiting Prince Albert is a absolute treat. Driving in from the awe-inspiring Swartberg Pass, you will be blown away by the views. Highlights of our trip was the Art After Dark tour- conducted by artist Hennie Boshoff at his house, Villa Kruger & the lovely food served at The Lazy Lizard. Best quiches I have tasted in a long time. Also worth stopping by Cafe Photo Albert to see their exciting photographic exhibitions!

Beaufort West Town of Central Karoo

Interesting town - Beaufort West is a quaint town with a lot of history. There are some amazing places for an overnight stop on your way to the Cape. The people are all very friendly. The Karoo National Park is worth driving through.

Just love it there! - Enjoyed the olive tasting at Swartrivier Olive Farm, the Swartberg Hotel's food and Gay's Dairy.

Laingsburg Town of Central Karoo

Laingsburg is worth a trip - Laingsburg and it's neighbouring Matjiesfontein are well worth a trip at least once in your life as a South African and as a tourist interested in South African history. Both places are rich in history and the people in the towns are really knowledgeable and super friendly. We had a great time exploring both of these places - the Flood Museum (Vloed Museum) and art installations are really touching and we were so lucky to meet a lovely lady who was there and survived the 1981 flood. Matjiesfontein is like a town frozen in time, it is so amazing to get to see Victorian era building and items - a lot of them still in working order or very well preserved. at 6pm every night there is an old 1950's red London Bus that takes you on a tour of the entire town, with the delightful Johnny as your guide. The tour is free and lasts all of 5min, as that's as big as the town is. We did find the little coffee shop to be a bit overpriced for what they are offering, but they have to make money somehow I guess so we did buy a couple of items there to do our part. Plus there's always the ghost stories if you are into that type of thing, though we didn't have any run in's haha.
