Kabula Lodge Western Zambia

Situated on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River, Western Zambia Kabula Lodge has been specifically designed to provide affordable and truly comfortable holiday accommodation for families who love fishing, birding, the outdoors and who want to enjoy Africa at its pristine best.  In keeping with the theme, the rustic and comfortable thatched chalets are built of local materials - wood, grass and reeds. Adding to the natural ambiance, each chalet has a beautiful wooden deck which overlooks the river. All with en-suite bathroom with shower. The fully grassed Kabula campsites, situated beneath huge indigenous trees, are without question the best on the river. These are serviced by clean and well designed ablutions that consist of rondavels, each containing a separate toilet and shower. The Lodge is located within Barotseland, the Lozi people’s mystical wetland region that the famous explorer David Livingstone explored so many years ago, Kabula Lodge provides the ideal holiday destination in a sparsely populated and relatively untouched region of Southern Africa where the magnificent indigenous forests are something to behold. The appeal of the Lodge has been further enhanced by its incorporation within the recently promulgated Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA) which is situated in the Okavango and Zambezi river basins where the borders of Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe converge. It will span an area of approximately 287 132 km, almost the size of Italy (300 979 km²), and will include 36 national parks, game reserves, community conservancies and game management areas.  This TFCA promises to be Southern Africa’s premier tourist destination with the largest contiguous population of the African elephant (approximately 250,000) in the continent.

Mfuwe Lodge is a safari lodge set in the most prolific game area of the South Luangwa. The perfect place to enjoy excellent game viewing and recharge your batteries. Set inside the park, just five minutes’ drive from the main gate, the lodge’s allure is instantly obvious. Beneath a canopy of ebony and mahogany, its thatched buildings are arranged around the banks of two lagoons where an endless stream of wildlife will keep you enthralled as you lounge on the open deck or take a dip in the swimming pool. This region of the park is renowned for its prolific game such as giraffe, buffalo, antelope and crocodile which are constant visitors to Mfuwe Lodge’s lagoon, whilst in November the local elephants regularly wander right through the lobby. Whether you stay overnight, or just have lunch en route to a bush camp, Mfuwe Lodge’s relaxed charm and enviable surroundings make it the perfect stopover. Mfuwe Lodge also offers you the chance to relax at its Bush Spa or buy a few mementos of your time in Zambia at our curio shop. We offer 18 thatched chalets from where you can enjoy your own private piece of Africa. Secluded covered verandahs look out over wallowing hippo’s and thirsty game in the lagoons, while the newly refurbished African interiors are the perfect place to wind down with their comfortable sitting rooms and en-suite bathrooms with walk-in showers. Walking safaris can be arranged on request, but the majority of outings are game drives, allowing guests to explore as much of this prolific region of the Luangwa Valley as possible. Drives are led by our experienced team of guides, setting out at first light, and then again in the late afternoon when the wildlife is at its most active. After sundowners, spotlights are used to pick out a new cast of nocturnal creatures.

Bushbuck River House is set in 105 acres of bush on the banks of the Zambezi and is the first property beyond the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park boundary. The house is an owner run traditional Zambian farm house, which has been renovated and thatched to a high standard. All rooms in the main house are en-suite and there is a swimming pool, pool boma and tree house/viewing platform overlooking the river. Located approximately 16km from the centre of town the house gives easy access to Livingstone and the Victoria Falls, whilst also providing a tranquil and secure setting. Because the property is bounded by both the National Park and the Zambezi River there are frequent sightings of bushbuck, waterbuck, elephant, hippo, duiker, buffalo, cape clawless otter, vervet monkey and baboon. Night sightings have included spotted genet, scrub hare, thick tailed bush baby and porcupine. A recent bird survey listed over 180 species. If you enjoy walking there is plenty of opportunity to do so, both on the farm itself and, if water levels are low, on one of the nearby islands in the Zambezi. Accommodation can be on a bed and breakfast, half board or full board basis. The evening meal is a three course set meal and food is freshly prepared and home cooked. Whenever possible we use produce from our own organic garden and orchard, but sometimes the elephants and monkeys get there first. Outside the main house we have one bedroom situated over a studio in the orchard. This room is next to the outside washrooms and has balcony views over both the river and the bush. Meals can be taken at the main house or you can self cater.

Cassin’s Bush Camp is a rustic self-catering camp situated on the banks of the West Lunga River, approximately 2 km upstream of the Luakera River confluence and 15 km south of the DRC border, on the 15,000-hectare Nkwaji Wildlife Game Ranch. The bush camp derives its name from the normally elusive cassin’s grey flycatcher, who has been a welcome resident and can be seen flying up and down the river daily. The pristine surrounds of the West Lunga River are fringed with Mushitu, palms, orchids and grassy dambo’s, and the bird variety is reflected by this changing habitat. The camp consists of four double classic safari tents and one family tent, with rustic en-suite bathrooms that each feature flushing toilets, showers and hand basins. The tented dining area, with fly-screen doors, includes a large dining area. Outside, next to the veranda, is an al fresco bar counter with a sink. The camp and its surrounds are an absolute birder's paradise, and day trips can be enjoyed in the area. Here, in the most north-west corner of Zambia, Mwinilunga and its surrounds has some extensive Miombo areas, but some parts are heavily settled. The Nkwaji Forests in contrast are totally uncut and pristine. Between the two areas there is an exciting array of birds to be seen.

Kakuli is a seasonal bush camp on the confluence of the Luwi and Luangwa rivers. For many it marks the end of a walking safari from camp to camp following the course of the Luwi River. Whether Kakuli is used as a stopover in the middle of a walking trail or as a base for a more static wildlife safari, the game viewing and night drive safaris in this area are some of the best in Zambia. There are four spacious, traditional safari tents under shady thatched roofs, each with an open-air bathroom. All of the tents overlook the river with stunning views up and down this hippo-packed stretch of the Luangwa. A lovely thatched chitenje acts as the centre of camp. It is on a wooden deck overlooking the grazing lawn that leads down to the two rivers and is a perfect spot in which to relax and watch the river and the wildlife meander by. Guests are able to decide each day if they want to venture out on foot or with the vehicle. Most evenings however, you will want to explore the area after dark. This stretch of the Luangwa is fantastic for wildlife. It is bustling with predators and the best time to see them in action is during those first few hours of darkness. Night drive safaris from Kakuli have been known to provide guests with some of the most exciting game viewing in Zambia. It is certain that your wildlife safari at Kakuli will be one to remember. Kakuli is one of the few Zambian bushcamps to open in February and March. At this time of year the river is high, we gain access by boat and activities are either on the river or on foot in the drier, sandy areas that surround camp.

Zambia Accommodation
Zambia is home to the spectacular Victoria Falls along the Zambezi River, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. It is known locally as the "Smoke that Thunders" due to the masses of spray sent flying up into the air.

The wild Zambezi River is ideal for the adventurous to try white water rafting, canoeing safaris, river surfing, bungi jumping and tiger fishing.

Zambia is known for it's walking safari's, where you can see big game and abundant birdlife in the raw, pulsating wilderness. Almost one-third of the country is made up of national parks and game reserves.

There are many places to see besides the Victoria Falls: Lake Kariba for houseboating excursions, Lake Tanganyika, the Chimp Sanctuary, Shiwa Ngandu - an old colonial manor house that is now a hotel surrounded by a private game reserve and hot springs, Lake Bangweulu, Livingstone Memorial, Lake Mweru which is surrounded by fishing villages, and offers a glimpse at rural village life. There are also numerous monuments, museums and art galleries to visit.

The Zambezi River is an angler’s dream, as fishermen travel from all over the world, hoping to land a toothy tigerfish or the rare, giant vundu. Avid birderwatchers also flock to Zambia to glimpse its fabulous diversity of birds, expecially the Chaplin’s barbets.

Distances between major towns and attractions are large, but for many, this is part of Zambia’s appeal. Feel a part of the real Africa, and take back with you the raw feel of true adventure.
