St Lucia Wetlands Park was declared a World Heritage site in 1999 at an unveiling ceremony where Nelson Mandela was guest of honour. The park was proclaimed a World Heritage site because of the huge biodiversity occurring in a relatively small area. Animals in the park include elephants, leopard, black and white rhino, buffalo, and in the ocean, whales, dolphins, and marine turtles including the leatherback and loggerhead turtle. Ingwenya Lodge is situated on the outskirts of the residential area and the property borders the nature reserve. We are a disabled friendly establishment with necessities such as handrails, wheelchair ramps and extra wide doors. We have two decks and one overlooks the swimming pool and the beautiful cycads planted towards the front of the guest house. Our other deck is private, although it is shared between three rooms and overlooks a section of bush adjoined to the St Lucia Wetland Area. Guests sitting on this deck have been lucky enough to see vervet monkeys, abundant bird life and even the occasional kudu or bushbuck. Come and stay with us to have the chance of experiencing all of this yourself. As our slogan says, “Tame the African Wilds in Style”.

We service the units daily and we will assist in all tours and information regarding your visit to the famous Greater St Lucia Wetland Park. Shops, pubs and restaurants are within walking distance. There is a public pleasure resort with a water slide only two minutes away. We do accept small pets and only one dog.

Set in a relaxing tranquil garden with large trees and lots of plants we have three conjoined cottage style units. The establishment is in the main street on the lake side away from town noise but close enough to walk to shops and restaurants. Our cottages offers standard, very well equipped, neat and tidy, homely, relaxed styled accommodation. Furniture and fittings are mix of old and new and hand made craft. Brick wall inside and out, high pine ceilings, tiled floors and carpeted bedrooms. One joined wall between units with a bathroom and very well equipped kitchen. Television with DSTV selected channels (Mnet, movies, sport). Each has own semi private garden area with braai and garden furniture, separated by plants. All opening windows and doors have insect netting. No lake views. These are family cottages with one or two bedrooms, one bathroom (shower basin toilet bath) per unit and an open plan kitchen dining lounge area with two single beds. A backdoor and glass patio doors at own garden area. We provide bath towels, kitchen towel and swab, dish liquid and sponge and coffee plunger all cutlery, crockery, cooking utensils and pots pans, clothes line and pegs, toaster, kettle, microwave and stove with oven and fridge. Parking is on site, under roof cover for one vehicle per unit. Once daily cleaning service is included. The communal path leads the way to the swimming pool and garden to lake area. The laid back garden attracts an abundance of birds and is regularly visited by Vervet monkey, Banded mongoose, Red Duiker, Bushbuck and sometime hippo grazing at night and more. Enjoy the sunset view (especially in winter) or relax under the tree on a lounger. This location is ideal for birders and nature lovers and serious eco-tourists/enthusiasts. Owner family lives on site and gives lots of info on arrival. Self drive or guided reserves and walks close by, other activities around town and big 5 park within one hours drive.

St Lucia is an attractive village lying at the southernmost tip of iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a World Heritage Site (formerly Greater St Lucia Wetland Park). This thriving eco-destination owes its popularity to the close proximity of various attractions and things to do in the area.

Surrounded by the estuary and Indian Ocean, St Lucia is almost an island. Here you can do a boat ride to see hippos and crocs, kayak on the lake, visit the Crocodile Research Centre, or do a hike or a horse trail. Nile crocodiles sun themselves on the banks; hippo roam the streets after dark and leopard are seen occasionally. Humpback Whales migrate along the coast from June to November. Loggerhead and leather back turtles lay their eggs on the beautiful sandy beaches from November to March.

St Lucia offers a number of walking trails where small antelope, mongoose and Samango monkeys can be seen. Birdwatchers are up for an exciting experience with around 450 recorded species to tick off. Not too far off is Mkuze, one of the best birding spots in South Africa. Also a long-time hangout for keen anglers, St Lucia has a good selection of tackle and bait shops. An assortment of seafood restaurants line the banks of the estuary.
