St Lucia is an attractive village lying at the southernmost tip of iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a World Heritage Site (formerly Greater St Lucia Wetland Park). This thriving eco-destination owes its popularity to the close proximity of various attractions and things to do in the area.

Surrounded by the estuary and Indian Ocean, St Lucia is almost an island. Here you can do a boat ride to see hippos and crocs, kayak on the lake, visit the Crocodile Research Centre, or do a hike or a horse trail. Nile crocodiles sun themselves on the banks; hippo roam the streets after dark and leopard are seen occasionally. Humpback Whales migrate along the coast from June to November. Loggerhead and leather back turtles lay their eggs on the beautiful sandy beaches from November to March.

St Lucia offers a number of walking trails where small antelope, mongoose and Samango monkeys can be seen. Birdwatchers are up for an exciting experience with around 450 recorded species to tick off. Not too far off is Mkuze, one of the best birding spots in South Africa. Also a long-time hangout for keen anglers, St Lucia has a good selection of tackle and bait shops. An assortment of seafood restaurants line the banks of the estuary.

One of the best places to visit!
We've travelled through South Africa extensively since 2010 and St Lucia is really a place we see ourselves visiting over and over again.

Tranquility !!!
Our first visit to St Lucia was in October 2012 and man did it rain. That was not at all a negative. We more than enjoyed Cape Vidal in the rain and Hluhluwi as well. This time we arrived in the rain as well only for the next day to be absolutely perfectly sunny. A most enjoyable destination to which we will most certainly return.Noel Furlong Cape Town

St Lucia is a quaint little town with awesome wildlife and beautiful scenery. The drive to Cape Vidal offers experiences to see some of South Africa's wildlife and the estuary and river was great to view hippos and crocodiles. Cape Vidal was beautiful with great weather and comfortable water temperatures. Waves and currents are strong and unpredictable so if snorkelling or swimming care should be taken. The town is well has enough stores and restaurants all in the main road so if staying anywhere in St Lucia it will never be a long way off. Will definitely go back

Was baie beindruk met St Lucia. Pragtige rustige dorp en skoon. Wat my opgeval het is die straat name wat so mooi sigbaar is en al die inligtingsborde. Het n rustige naweek daar gehad.

Best of all worlds
If you cannot decide on taking a safari or a beach vacation then go through to St Lucia. It has the best of both worlds. Incredible clean beaches that stretches for miles!! Can go on safaris, fishing, boat rides on the estuary. See everything from hippos, crocodiles to whales and dolphins. Driving through the town you can see monkeys. Going through to Cape Vidal for snorkelling you drive through the reserve so seeing buffalo and kudu is likely...not forgetting the incredible views

Clean and pretty
St Lucia is a very clean town. The boat ride was good and the Whale Place gave good advice on snorkeling. The Spar is exceptionally expensive. The Braca and Surf and Turn are great dinner venues. The locals are not good for international tourists because they are not very helpful and don't seem to have knowledge of their own area.

Mini out of city break away
We had a great time in St Lucia. The weather is great there. There's plenty to do such as the market, beach and the Butterfly Sanctuary, which was our highlight of the trip. There's also some whale watching, fishing and a some wild life. It's a great place for a mini getaway.Emily.

Love St Lucia
Throughout the years we have travelled around South Africa and stayed at many places, but when we first discovered St Lucia it immediately became our destination of choice for all our holidays! We try to go in August of each year as the shad season is still open and the weather is fabulous!

St Lucia, a hidden gem!
We had no idea what to expect of St Lucia. Travelling down from a very wet holiday in Cathedral Peak, we feared more of the same! The weather was warm and bright, just the job! Every way you turned, there was something to surprise you. The wild animals were superb and included Hippos, monkeys, wonderful birds, deer, water buffalo, zebras, warthogs etc etc.Our trip to Cape Vidal was brilliant, even if the monkeys did steal our lunch! An absolutely fantastic place!

Far too little time to see everything!Unfortunately we only had three days in St Lucia, it is beautiful and there is so much to experience. The boat tour is highly recommendable: we saw many hippos and had a great guide. When touring we were very close to zebras and wildebeest.

St Lucia is a lovely little town with lots of activities and tours to enjoy. You have the best of both - Bush and Beach. The Park was proclaimed a World Heritage Site because of the rich biodiversity, unique ecosystems and natural beauty occurring in a relatively small area. The reason for the huge diversity in fauna and flora is the great variety of different ecosystems ranging from coral reefs and sandy beaches to subtropical dune forests, savannas, and wetlands. Animals you may see include elephants, leopard, black and white rhino, buffalo, and in the ocean, whales, dolphins, and marine...

A must to visit
A place to visit in St Lucia is the Fisherman's Restaurant, Pub and take away. The food is the best! It might not look like much from the outside, but once you're in, the atmosphere, people and food will forever fill your heart with a longing to return for more. This is a truly warm South African place to visit, where tourist can see how the true South Africans get together to watch our favourite sports, drink our favourite drinks and eat the best seafood on the planet.

Great basecamp
St Lucia is a not very commercial little town with a one-main street busy street (i.e. a strip with gas pump, supermarket, restaurants, stores) and a small grit of lanes and avenues. Hippo's may stroll the streets at night. Don't panic.
