    Philippolis Reviews

We love stopping over in Philippolis on our way home. This year we stayed in "Oppistoep" - what a gem! The rooms are beautifully decorated. Not really any place to have a lunch - lucky Food Zone was still open (Saturday afternoon). We were happy to see the new addition "Siels Kos" for a dinner option, but we opted to go for "Oom Japie" as we always do. They are very expensive but we've always had a friendly welcome and enjoy the home-cooked meal and good ol' fashioned hospitality from Richard.

    Interesting and reflective
This is an interesting and clean town with lots to see and do. Visit the tigers on the nearby farm of John Varty. Pay a visit to the Job house for a deep reflective experience and walk trough the labyrinth. Interesting bookshop can be found at Oom Japie's house. The residents are very warm, friendly and kind people. Philippolis is definitely worth a visit - a quaint village!

Philippolis: A small town in the Great Karoo
Back in 1972, the residents of Philippolis had a sad time. Until then, cars on the highway between Cape Town and Johannesburg passed through their town. But overnight the taps were turned off as the N1 was rerouted via the Gariep dam and Springfontein, only a short yet telling distance away. The economy of the town crumbled, and the five petrol stations of those days became the one of today. In the long run, Philippolis has seen a positive side to this rerouting of the national road – serious crime is very rare, property prices have remained largely affordable and national monuments have remain...

Philippolis - Your scenic short-cut between Bloemfontein and Colesberg
Philippolis lies 180 kilometers south from Bloemfontein and is only 60 kilometers from Gariep Dam, in the flat grassland prairie characteristic of this section of the Free State. The narrow side streets of our town and many of the older buildings are a reminder of the early Griqua settlers. The Griqua history of the Kok and other Kaptyns remains central to our town’s character, and is well presented in the Transgariep Museum, situated next to the equally historical library. Anglo-Boer Warbattles and the emergence of Emily Hobhouse and the work she did for theBoer women and children in the conc...

Philippolis - skoon, vars en veilig
Philippolis is veilig, vars lug en is 'n skoon dorpie. Almal is vriedelik. Oom Japie se huis is...

    Peace and quite
A town seperate from the hustle and bustle of city life. Tucked away in the Free State, a town surprisingly rich in history, including sites of anglo-boer history. The Job huis is a must see with art works that will touch you spiritually. For peace and quite get away to Philippolis. Defintely worth the drive.
