Quaint and Old World
Serenely placed among the mountains, Montagu is filled with old world charm. This little town has character and heart. Because of the dry climate, most of the green garden lawns have been replaced with gravel but this does not detract from it's beauty. Put on your walking shoes and explore this haven to it's best advantage, just not on a Sunday as everything closes.
Usually we drive straight through Montagu en route to Oudtshoorn and beyond. However we decided to spend a weekend in the town. We discovered some very interesting facts about the history of the town and the people from visiting The Museum and another house close by which was the first house built in the town. There was a very informative lady who told us the history of the area. We visited the many wine estates in the area and they were all top class. So too were the restaurants in the town where I had the best pasta I've ever tasted.
After a hectic year of living in the rat race of Gauteng, it was a pleasure to spend a few days in the oasis of calm that surrounds Montagu. We loved the rose gardens on many of the properties, the mostly level streets enabling an easy walk in safe surrounds to go to restaurants in the evening, and the opportunity to cycle through some stunning countryside. Our family ranging from 13 to over 50 years have all said we want to go back.
