A gem not too far from Cape Town
If you like history then Matjiesfontein is a must. Don't make the mistake of thinking that you can see it all in one morning. The museum at the station is simply packed with social history items relating to Victorian life in South Africa (be sure to go downstairs to the basement displays). We were sorry not to make the bus tour in the red London bus ( it runs at 6pm from Mon to Sat). There is also a transport museum and other interesting places to explore. A must is to have a drink at the Lairds Arms next door to the hotel where the piano is still played every day.

    A stopover in Matjiesfontein
If one has a sense of history, the walk around Matjiesfontein is very rewarding, and the museum is absorbingly interesting. Arrive early enough to stroll around and spend an hour or two at the museum

    Nice village
There's plenty to do at Matjiesfontein: a transport museum, a general museum, pub, coffee shop etc (all apparently part of the Lord Milner estate). It's a pity the hotel hasn't had the investment it needs - it could be five star and command higher prices.

    Time stands still
Matjiesfontein is a delightful place to experience being frozen in time from the 1890s to the 1930s. It’s always charming and a great place to visit, either by train or car. This small colonial oasis is situated in the midst of the rather desolate but dramatic Karoo. It’s certainly worth the experience even if the grandeur is somewhat faded and in need of some renovation here and there.
