
About Witteberg Nature Reserve
The Witteberg Nature Reserve is located 250 km from Cape Town in the heart of the Witteberg Mountains south-west of the historic village of Matjiesfontein. Three Witteberg vegetation units exist on the property, namely Matjiesfontein Shale Fynbos, Shale Renosterbosveld and Quartzite Fynbos. Indigenous fauna on the property includes grey rhebuck, klipspringer, duiker, steenbok, aardwolf, aardvark, black-backed jackal, leopard, caracal, Cape fox, bat-eared fox and many more. The prolific birdlife includes many colourful species of nectar sippers. The rich cultural-historic elements on the property include Late Stone Age artefacts, marine trace fossils, many historic buildings and other historic structures. The total size of the reserve is 4365 hectares, or about 44 square kilometres. The beautiful natural environment, the well-documented cultural-historic elements, the special “sense of place”, the extensive network of 4x4 mountain trails and the clear night skies ensure that there is something of interest for all nature lovers and outdoors enthusiasts.
