About Witteberg Nature Reserve

The Witteberg Nature Reserve is located 250 km from Cape Town in the heart of the Witteberg Mountains south-west of the historic village of Matjiesfontein. Three Witteberg vegetation units exist on the property, namely Matjiesfontein Shale Fynbos, Shale Renosterbosveld and Quartzite Fynbos. Indigenous fauna on the property includes grey rhebuck, klipspringer, duiker, steenbok, aardwolf, aardvark, black-backed jackal, leopard, caracal, Cape fox, bat-eared fox and many more. The prolific birdlife includes many colourful species of nectar sippers. The rich cultural-historic elements on the property include Late Stone Age artefacts, marine trace fossils, many historic buildings and other historic structures. The total size of the reserve is 4365 hectares, or about 44 square kilometres. The beautiful natural environment, the well-documented cultural-historic elements, the special “sense of place”, the extensive network of 4x4 mountain trails and the clear night skies ensure that there is something of interest for all nature lovers and outdoors enthusiasts.

Such an amazing place to stay. It is easy to drive by on the N2 wonder what is on either side of the highway well this is a good example of why you should venture off the highway. Frik was a great host worth a visit it would have been good to stay a day or two longer.

The accommodation was just what we wanted, basic and comfortable, fairly well equipped with a nice big table - our group for two cottages was 7 adults - It all appeared to be clean. Frik was an excellent host and tried to assist with any of our queries. Two small criticisms - my one pillow was very smelly. I could have done with a colander or sieve for straining pasta .

The cottage lies in a beautiful valley between the mountains. Comfortable and clean accommodation. The bathroom had ample shelves and a small bench which is really a bonus for a traveller to put all our "goodies" on. Frik is a very friendly and helpful host who walks the exra mile for his guests. Great that it is pet friendly, it has a small enclosed area to keep them safe. With solar power and gas we did not miss Eskom.

The walks are long, peaceful and spectacular. Loads of rare and endangered fynbos.
