A circular double-storey with an interesting past, The Water Tower sits in a pleasant garden in the heart of Nieu Bethesda. This quirky building was first a water tower and then a Buddhist meditation room. With whitewashed walls and wooden floors, it is a calm and clean space from which to enjoy the famous Karoo sky, day or night.

The Water Tower sleeps two guests on a queen-size bed in the room upstairs adjoining the sun/star deck. The kitchenette is below with the private shower and composting toilet attached. Do some stargazing on the deck before creeping under your crisp cotton sheets, lamb’s wool duvets and mohair blanket. Pets are welcome by arrangement.

Life in Nieu Bethesda potters along much as it did 130 years ago, when the village was founded. Stone water furrows still line the wide, dusty streets. Night skycaps are unpolluted by streetlights and the air is still fresh and clean.

Nieu Bethesda has a working network of furrows, with water supplied daily from a spring on the plateau above the village. Residents channel water into their gardens using smaller gated funnels. Visitors can hike along the furrows up to the spring. Horse riding is offered at several places in the village as well.

The area around Nieu Bethesda is good for either a leisurely ride or a challenging ride for serious mountain bikers. If you’re feeling lazy, hire a bike from the Outsiders B&B and cruise around the village. Alternatively, wake up early to conquer one of the two mountain bike trails in the area.

At Ganora we offer visitors a special South African experience. The history of Ganora spans 270 million years, from fossil beds of mammal-like reptiles to evidence of bushman paintings and etchings as well as Anglo Boer War engravings. Additionally a tour of our wool shed offers a glimpse into farm life today.

The charming cottage is situated on the farm approximately 7 km from Nieu Bethesda and the famous Owl House. The cottage is self-contained and guests can choose to self cater, have meals on the farm, or we can make reservations at a cosy restaurant in Nieu Bethesda. The Khoisan Cottage is ideal for people seeking an active and hospitable stay on a working sheep farm, or those wishing to relax and unwind in the peace and tranquility of Karoo simplicity.

We offer a range of activities including birdwatching, mountain biking, 4x4 trails, hiking and mountain climbing, and guided tours to bushman paintings and artefacts, as well as fossil walks.

For those who’re looking to spend a night or two in the warm heart of Nieu-Bethesda, Nagenoeg - meaning “near enough” in Afrikaans - is the most centrally situated guest house in the village. Even better, for those who’re getting married, it’s only three meters from Die Waenhuis wedding venue.

A charming, self-catering “golden oldie”, Nagenoeg is situated on the corner of Martin and Hudson streets, and has three bedrooms; two have double beds and one has two single beds, which makes it perfect for a family stay. Features include one shared bathroom with a bath but no shower, a large dining room, and a sun-drenched kitchen. During winter, you can cosy up to the fireplace in the lounge or entertain the family in the games room.

Whip up a meal in the kitchen. Nagenoeg has a fridge, two-plate stove, microwave and more, or have a braai outside while your kids run around in the large garden. Do note, however, that the property is not fenced in for pets.

Daisy Cottage is situated in Nieu Bethesda, some 60 km from Graaff-Reinet, and is quite isolated with only two roads in and out of the village. Nieu Bethesda is home to Helen Martin's Owl House. The Owl House has an extraordinary collection of cement statues and is a place that must definitely be visited.
