Pepper Tree was a humble worker’s cottage built during the late 1880s as part of a larger farm in the Breede River Valley. 100 years later, the South African Heritage Resource Agency declared the cottage a National Monument on the Western Cape Heritage Site.

Today it still retains its outer clay walls and Palmiet ceiling, beneath the brand solder and thatched roof. A reed wall protects a simple outside shower, while a stone hearth provides the centrepiece for fireside evenings.

The cottage has an intimate ambience, with a traditional open fireplace that is graced with a small Queen Ann wood stove. There is a queen-size bed dressed with crisp white linen. The en-suite bathroom and fully equipped kitchen opens out onto a veranda and fragrant herb garden.

Braai facilities with seating areas are shaded by the Pepper and Blue Gum trees, offering beautiful views of the mountain and nature reserve.

Ons Huisie is situated in the quiet side of the village, yet close to shops. It is guarded by the trunk of an enormous gum tree, whose roots once reached through the floor and beyond; now a memorial to itself. We have just the right amount of neighbours and a clear view of the mountains across the fields from our front door.

This cottage has a bedroom with a queen-size bed and a mezzanine with two single beds. There is an en-suite bathroom with a shower and a separate bathroom with a bath and wall shower. This traditional whitewashed-thatched cottage has a renovated kitchen fitted with an electric four-plate hob, combo grill-oven-microwave; kettle and toaster, basic cooking utensils and crockery and cutlery. The under counter fridge has a small ice compartment. The kitchen has a cosy dining area and leads into the lounge.

When it’s chilly, snuggle up to the cob fireplace which heats up and radiates warmth. The renovations were done with accessibility in mind, so though it doesn’t meet all requirements, the space gives an easy flow of movement.

Relax in the large secluded garden which is fenced making it safe for small children and pets to run and play.
