Kalk Bay is a bastion to the Cape's sea-faring past. First visited by Simon Van Der Stel in the 17th Century one can't help but feel you've travelled back in time, worlds away from the high-rise hustle of Cape Town. Named after the chalky lime stone deposits found in the area by the Dutch in 1806 Kalk Baai (Chalk Bay) soon became a busy little fishing village. A railway line in 1883 brought with it more fishermen and tourists in their scores. In 1895 a municipality was founded and non-fishing families were encouraged to settle in the area. This developed into a tight knit bustling seaside village and much of everything that makes it special remains today.

Everything in Kalk Bay is within safe walking distance and it's a great way to really soak up the charm of the village. Restaurants are speckled all along the main road along the shore catering for every taste should you wish to try something different away from Chartfield Guesthouse's cuisine. From festive pubs to tranquil eateries, everything is on your doorstep. There are monuments at- testing to the history of Kalk Bay, a variety of quaint home-owned stores far removed from the impersonal malls of the city and Kalk Bay Books is one of the finest bookshops you'll find anywhere in the country should you fancy something to read while on holiday. Down the road is the Historic Naval Base in Simon's Town resplendent with old pubs and seaside dining. Within 30 minutes you are already at the Cape of Good Hope or at the Cape Town City Centre or at the Airport.

Tranquility Guest House

Tranquility Guest House is situated just 30 minutes south of Cape Town and nestles between two mountains and two oceans along the False Bay coast. Set high up on a mountainside, it boasts magnificent sea and mountain views, and is within walking distance to the beach. Since its opening, Tranquility has been inundated with people who love a delightful place to be and a place where refreshment and restoration are not hard to find, including warm South African hospitality.

Open the mountain door and, if you are feeling energetic, take a walk in Table Mountain National Park, amidst the indigenous fynbos, to Elsie’s Peak, where the views are unbelievable and False Bay lies before you from Strandfontein to Cape Point; or within a few minutes’ walk to Fish Hoek’s beautiful, long, white, sandy beach, one of the safest and warmest swimming beaches in the Cape; and its equally famous whale-watching promenade, Jaegers Walk, where from July to October, whales loll just 50 metres from the shore in preparation for mating and giving birth and huge schools of dolphins may be nearby. Visitors are sometimes treated to the sight of the local fishermen 'trekking' (the Dutch word for pulling) for haarders and yellowtail fish just off the beach. Smell the salt in the air, feel the sand between your toes and breathe in the fresh mountain air.

If you're hungry, why not try the fish shop across from the BP garage in the village, renowned by Capetonians across the Peninsula for its delicious fish and chips. If it is exercise you are looking for and you have a bike or a good pair of shoes, the road to Kalk Bay or to Simon’s Town is the perfect one to hit. With waves crashing below you on one side and mountains towering above you on the other, your senses become intoxicated with just being alive. Kalk Bay, with its famous fishing Harbour; its own version of Petticoat Lane: junk shop after junk shop filled with bric-a-brac and “antiques” and of course its famous cafés and restaurants – not to mention ‘Olympia Café and Deli’, known for its good food and its fresh pastries - is only around the cove. Historical Simon’s Town, its naval base and museums, its famous dog - St. Just Nuisance – and its boat trip to see the now famous breaching of the Great White Shark; as well as Boulder’s Beach - swimming with the penguins - are a twelve minute car ride away and a twenty minute ride by car will have you at the most south westerly point of Africa at Cape Point, a natural World Heritage Site, where the cold Benguela current on the West coast and the warm Agulhus current on the East coast merge. The guest house is ten minutes by car from the internationally renowned Chapman’s Peak Drive and the oldest wine route in the Cape, the Constantia Vineyards, the first, a perfect vantage point to watch the sun go by and the second, a great outing for a rainy day, where anything from wine to olives can be enjoyed.

The guest house is 45 minutes away from Cape Town International Airport and centrally disposed to all of Cape Town’s tourist attractions, the perfect guest house for one day tours to Cape Town city-centre, the V&A Waterfront, and Table Mountain; Hermanus; the Cape Winelands and the West Coast National Park to see the flowers. Should you be a golfing enthusiast, your wife shall have the privilege of waking up and looking out her window to catch you, in time, teeing off of your first hole – with binoculars, of course – at the famous Clovelly Country Club just across the valley.

What is tranquility? A luxurious and exclusive guest house where food is our passion, the tranquility addictive and the attention to detail our gift. Where you leave the bustle of the valley below and you rest beneath the crag of a mountain; you lie in bed watching the sunrise and you hear the Cape francolins announcing the start of a new day; you linger by the fireside eating a delicious home-cooked breakfast and you soak up the sun on your private deck whilst reading your favourite book; you take Rosie, our border collie, for a walk to the beach or up Elsie’s Peak and you become one with nature and smell the fresh flowers; you watch whales frolic in the bay and you gaze in awe at the breathtaking views of the valley, mountains and sea; you lie in the Jacuzzi on the mountain deck beneath the stars and you relax in a candle-lit bath spellbound by the moonlight; you feel the warmth of hospitality and you enjoy the pleasures of Tranquility. It is the most peaceful state of mind. So why not come and stay at a guest house which has something for everyone and plenty of soul too. May Tranquility touch your soul.

False Bay South Africa

False Bay Guest House Accommodation

The False Bay seaboard curves south in a huge arc from Gordon's Bay stretching past the Strand, Muizenberg and ending at Cape Point. A variety of village-like suburbs nestle between the mountains and coast from Muizenberg to  Simon’s Town.

The Metrorail line conveniently snakes along the coast with frequent stops and one can hop off here and there to explore. For surfers and bathers the water on this side of the Peninsula is blissfully warmer by a few degrees.

Muizenberg was once the trendiest beachfront in Cape Town. Agatha Christy liked to holiday and catch a wave here. The glamour of the 1920s is scarcely evident in the crumbling facades of Art Deco buildings along the beachfront. Plans to radically upgrade this area are already underway, so check it out before it gets a radical facelift. A safe swimming beach fringed with vibrantly painted bathing huts, lots of surf schools and shops, trendy cafes, restaurants, easy parking and a waterslide still make it a popular destination.

Starting at the Edwardian-style Muizenberg station, the Historical Mile is an easy amble along the shore. Stop in for tea at the Natale Labia Museum, explore the Rhodes Cottage museum and view Posthuys, a rustic, thatched Cape-vernacular-style building. Built in 1673, it’s arguably the oldest building in South Africa.

This brings one to St James, a much prettier suburb than Muizenberg with its own tiny beach, tidal pool and bright Victorian-style bathing houses.

Kalk Bay is an amazing place with a vibrant, bohemian atmosphere. There’s a quaint fishing harbour, trendy cafes, restaurants and interesting antique shops. It’s also Cape Town’s only true fish market where one can choose fresh fish straight off the wooden boats.

Just around the corner is the family friendly suburb of Fish Hoek. The beach is the main attraction here and it definitely has the best swimming beach in Cape Town. The sheltered bay makes it an attractive launch site for paddlers and Hobie Cat sailors. There’s a play park for children and a good beachfront restaurant. From here, scenic Jager’s Walk fringes the rocky shore ending at Sunny Cove. It’s a good place to do some whale spotting or snorkelling in the rock pools.

Picturesque Simon’s Town sits at the end of the Metrorail line and has a delightful nautical atmosphere. It has so much going for it, from cheerful naval officers striding about, a cobbled town square, a yacht marina, good restaurants and the only breeding colony of penguins on the mainland, situated at Boulder's Beach. One could easily spend an entire day here and it’s an excellent stopover on the way to Cape Point.

The False Bay seaboard curves south in a huge arc from Gordon's Bay stretching past the Strand, Muizenberg and ending at Cape Point. A variety of village-like suburbs nestle between the mountains and coast from Muizenberg to  Simon’s Town.
