This exclusive country house is on an historic, working wine, fruit and game farm, situated between the towns of Swellendam and Ashton on the R-60, at the foot of the mighty Langeberg Mountains. Granted as a "freehold farm" in 1723, the historically significant Jan Harmans' schat "Jan Harman’s Treasure" featured in the writings of Lady Anne Barnard.
Accommodation can be found in three separate buildings; The Original Wine Cellar, The Slave Quarters and Van Eeden House. Each with its distinctive style and history, Jan Harmsgat tells its story.

Restaurant 1723: All overnight guests are treated to a Jan Harmsgat Breakfast, which includes fresh fruit parfait topped with homemade muesli and yogurt, followed by hot breakfast of their choice, fresh squeezed juice and fresh brewed coffee or tea. Lunch and dinner menu changes frequently as the kitchen utilizes fresh produce grown in its own garden. Jan Harmsgat is registered and has been awarded the Fair Trade in Tourism S.A Trademark

The en-suite bathroom is recently renovated for luxury and it’s well-equipped with everything you need and expect.

The Garden Room is a generous size and also features a modernized bathroom. The crisp white linens and original wood pair so beautifully and it’s a refreshing, comfortable space to suit any needs. A rowing boat is available for fishing on the river, while the sunset can be enjoyed from a lovely deck.

Arendsnes lies just a few kilometres outside Bonnievale, en route to Montagu within the beautiful wine districts of Montagu and Robertson. The area has a range of places to explore including a large cheese factory, a Khoi fish farm, wine estates and local cellars.

An enormous farm-style kitchen is well equipped and caters for more than one chef. It leads into the dining room with a large table and an open fireplace, and out into the outdoor braai area.

Come winter, come summer, you are always welcome at Merwenstein Guest farm. The guesthouse is a place where the owners will do their utmost to make you part of their family. We have three en-suite double bedrooms; each has two three-quarter beds, roof fan, heater, coffee and tea making facilities, en-suite shower/WC with bathroom heater and hairdryer, private entrances and covered patios.

The rooms are connected to a guest lounge. One room has an air-conditioner and this room is adapted for a wheelchair with drive-in shower facilities. You will be personally greeted at arrival and after a refreshing glass of grape juice; you will be taken on a guided walk of the farm. For those that cannot walk, the tour is done with a VW-bus. You will see the specific activity for that day and be informed about the trials and tribulations of farming with fruit. The tour will take you through orchards and vineyards down to the Breede River, which flows, passed the farm.

A rich variety of plant and birdlife exists there and if you wish, you can then board the Breede River Goose, a river cruiser operated by a neighbouring farmer. It is a most relaxing cruise and you will see a wide variety of birds. Dinner is served in the kitchen and Hugo and Heidi will sit down with you and at the most six other guests. Heidi adventures with her cooking to blend European styles with African and Malay style cooking. A lot of fresh vegetables and salads are always on the set menu so that even a vegetarian can have a wholesome dinner. Wine served at the table is from the Merwespont Wine Cellar.

Breakfast is served from 08h00 until 12h00, about the time we start to serve lunch! If nothing has you in a holiday mood, this will get you! No specific time to clear your room except if there is a special request from Heidi to do so. Breakfast is in our entertainment room with panoramic windows giving you a view over the orchards and vineyards. On cold mornings a fire from the alpine fireplace will warm you up.

We offer our fruit about tour: This specialty tour will take you up close and personal to the delights of fruit and wine farming. Come and meet the family and whilst they entertain you with interesting farm stories walk through apricot, peach and plum orchards. In season experience the harvesting of the fruit, follow the wine making process and choose some fruit just for yourself. A wide variety of birds, indigenous flowers and plants are shown. After working up an appetite, relax under huge eucalyptus trees for a farm lunch and birdsong as background music, and if you are lucky you might spot our shy rover otter family.

The cosy open-plan kitchen and lounge area with a fireplace is perfect for chilly winter evenings. There is no TV, as we encourage conversation. For the summer months, guests can enjoy a nice braai on the patio. Firewood is sold locally.

Do not miss out on a beautiful sunrise with a front row seat from the patio. The veld and vineyards are ideal for a walk, run or bike ride. Nightsky, which is only 1.7km from Buitensorg, offers catch-and-release fishing on their dam.

Situated at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains, off the R60 between Ashton and Swellendam, Bonfrutti offers a wholesome taste of farm life in four comfortable self-catering cottages. This is truly the ideal place to unwind and enjoy the crisp clean air.

The farm offers more than enough space to enjoy long hikes or easy walks through the orchards. Bring your mountain bikes, swim in the big farm dam or try your luck at fishing.

De Oude Werf consists of two of the oldest farm houses in the area, and is an ideal spot for a group or family for a larger gathering, with a sleeping capacity of 18 guests. Both houses have lots of character, with original yellow wood doors and beams and bamboo ceilings that keep the heat out in summer and the cold out in winter. The houses are located right next to each other, sharing a lawn and view of the dam from the voorstoep. The two houses are let as a combined unit. Wood is available at an additional cost.

Perskepit Cottage sleeps four guests in two bedrooms with its original wooden floors. There is an inside fireplace and an outside braai area for entertainment.

Druiwetros and Olyftak Cottages sleep four guests each. The cottages consist of one bedroom with a queen-size bed and two single beds in the living area with an en-suite bathroom. These two cottages are ideal for two couples or families spending a weekend together. Each cottage features a cosy living room with a fireplace, a fully equipped kitchenette and an outside braai area.
