Merwenstein Guestfarm

Description

Come winter, come summer, you are always welcome at Merwenstein Guest farm. The guesthouse is a place where the owners will do their utmost to make you part of their family. We have three en-suite double bedrooms; each has two three-quarter beds, roof fan, heater, coffee and tea making facilities, en-suite shower/WC with bathroom heater and hairdryer, private entrances and covered patios.

The rooms are connected to a guest lounge. One room has an air-conditioner and this room is adapted for a wheelchair with drive-in shower facilities. You will be personally greeted at arrival and after a refreshing glass of grape juice; you will be taken on a guided walk of the farm. For those that cannot walk, the tour is done with a VW-bus. You will see the specific activity for that day and be informed about the trials and tribulations of farming with fruit. The tour will take you through orchards and vineyards down to the Breede River, which flows, passed the farm.

A rich variety of plant and birdlife exists there and if you wish, you can then board the Breede River Goose, a river cruiser operated by a neighbouring farmer. It is a most relaxing cruise and you will see a wide variety of birds. Dinner is served in the kitchen and Hugo and Heidi will sit down with you and at the most six other guests. Heidi adventures with her cooking to blend European styles with African and Malay style cooking. A lot of fresh vegetables and salads are always on the set menu so that even a vegetarian can have a wholesome dinner. Wine served at the table is from the Merwespont Wine Cellar.

Breakfast is served from 08h00 until 12h00, about the time we start to serve lunch! If nothing has you in a holiday mood, this will get you! No specific time to clear your room except if there is a special request from Heidi to do so. Breakfast is in our entertainment room with panoramic windows giving you a view over the orchards and vineyards. On cold mornings a fire from the alpine fireplace will warm you up.

We offer our fruit about tour: This specialty tour will take you up close and personal to the delights of fruit and wine farming. Come and meet the family and whilst they entertain you with interesting farm stories walk through apricot, peach and plum orchards. In season experience the harvesting of the fruit, follow the wine making process and choose some fruit just for yourself. A wide variety of birds, indigenous flowers and plants are shown. After working up an appetite, relax under huge eucalyptus trees for a farm lunch and birdsong as background music, and if you are lucky you might spot our shy rover otter family.

Merwenstein

The guest house lacks the little attention to detail eg. a towel at the front door not a mat, lights not working in bedrooms, no soap in bathrooms, mattresses and pillows substandard and dinners very expensive for the quality of food given. Powdered milk on tea-trays in bedrooms. Very untidy. Heidi and Hugo lovely people.

We had a wonderful stay at Mervenstein Guest House. Heidi made us a very interesting and learning tour among grapes and fruit trees and the river. We learned a lot of how a farm was driven. The house was very clean and we enjoyed every minute we spend there. We can recommend Mervenstein guesthouse with all our hearth. We visited the kindergarten, and were impressed of the work that was shoved there. Thank you for a wonderful but too short stay. Flemming and Ingelise from Denmark

We had an absolutely wonderful stay and will definitely return. The meals were wonderful as well as the wines shared during the dinners. The owners - Heidi and Hugo could not have been more helpful or friendly.

What a gem!

We were welcomed by Felicity, who looks after the place and did the cooking. Later we met the owner, Hugo, who was very willing to share with us about what happens on the farm. As it was winter, there was not much happening, but he took us on a walk through the fields and explained the ins and outs of fruit and vine farming. Meals were great, and were a time for more discussions. As we were the only guests, the place was very quiet. A great place to stay!
