Bela Bela (Warmbaths) Travel Guide

The small town of Bela Bela was previously known as Warmbaths – and for good reason. The town owes its existence to the immense hot spring that gushes to the surface at 53°C. There are a number of family resorts complete with waterslides, play parks ...

Good - Lovely breakaway.

Teaming with Wildllife - I have read with annoyance people constantly saying that there is very little game to be found in Mabalingwe Nature Reserve. Well if you expect to race through the reserve in your car with music blaring and demanding to see "the Elephants & Rhinos" from anybody that will listen (I have personally observed this), then no there isn't many animals. Mabalingwe reserve is huge and you need to do your homework, but believe me there are a abundance of animals. In the last week I have spotted the following: herds of Zebra, Wildebeest and Buffalo. I have been chased by a very angry elephant Matriarch while watching a new born elephant calf experiencing life for the first time. Kudu, Nyala, Giraffe, Waterbuck, Impala and Warthog can be found everywhere. More elusive is the Gemsbok (but yes I saw them) and the Hippo prefer spending their days in the water and then make their appearance at dusk. Tsessebe and Rooi Hartebeest need a bit of effort to find. Lion you can visit on Wednesday and Sunday mornings. The only member of the Big 5 that I did not spot is Leopard, but I am convinced they there. So put in some effort and you will be richly rewarded. For those that like a beer in their hand, music thumping, elbow out may I suggest the Lion Park outside Joburg.
