The Bushman’s Hideout is an old Colonial-style luxury villa set in the natural African bush gardens of Zanzibar Villas’ Private Estate. The villa was built on solid ancient coral reef rock and is surrounded by a natural African paradise garden, full of wild flowers, game such as dik-dik antelope and bush pigs, and a variety of colourful bird and butterfly species. Many animals come to drink at the water hole or graze on the grass in front of the main verandah in the early mornings and evenings. Originally built in 1996 for an Englishman, the décor is a mix of traditional Zanzibari and rustic African styles, all contributing to its unique atmosphere. The villa layout is on a single level, with solid wooden floors elevated above the bush and gardens, and a large front verandah and walkways leading around the building to more private terraces set outside each bedroom. Stone Town is now home to the new Mashariki Palace Hotel. This is the eastern palace on the islands, once the seat of the Omani empire spanning a thousand miles, created by the first sultan of Zanzibar almost 200 years ago. The domicile of the Sultan's religious councillor is now restored beyond its former magnificence. The Mashariki Palace Hotel is a privileged residence for travellers choosing refined hospitality in a historical setting. Our hospitality is based on good taste and warmth, comfort and style. The 18 non-smoking rooms are all unique; the ground floor looks into the courtyard and has high ceilings, several have balconies, some have sea views, some have a living area or mezzanine floor, but all are enclosed in this original ancient palace with cool, thick walls, Arabian beds, stucco decoration and carved doors, bringing you the essence of old Zanzibar with a twist of modern chic. Wandering through the ancient corridors, your thoughts will drift to the past splendour of a lost era, and the secret memories, like a faint waft of incense, that this old palace jealously preserves. All rooms include breakfast until 11 am and are equipped with air-conditioning, mosquito nets, spring box mattresses, a baby crib, hairdryer, internal phone, minibar, laptop safe, flat screen TV, free WiFi wireless Internet access, anti-panic door lock and complimentary tea and coffee facilities. An al fresco lunch or starlight dinner is available on request, as is laundry service, extra bed and babysitting services. In our tea lounge, the pastry chef offers a selection of savouries and tea cakes to enjoy with Zanzibar traditional morning coffee selection or afternoon spiced teas. Treat yourself to a relaxing massage or hammam scrub to wind down from your journey and prepare your body for the beach, or have a nap on the sun beds in our open terrace. Relaxing on our sea view terrace overlooking the Old Town, with mosques, churches and temples below, you can cast your eyes past the tropical seafront gardens to the sparkling blue Indian Ocean and wonder about the generations of people who sailed here on gentle monsoon breezes. As the sound of the muezzin call to prayer mingles with the laughter of Zanzibar children at play, and the red sun sets over the sea to bring the sultry and star-spangled African evening, you will sense the pulse of this living, breathing, vibrant town, and bask in the charm of a mingling past and present.

Kilindi Zanzibar is a rarity in the world of luxury boutique hotels. Originally designed for Benny Andersson, one of the members of the world famous Abba pop music group, Kilindi is a true blend of the very best of diverse cultures to be found in Tanzania and on the adjacent island of Zanzibar. The concept behind Kilindi's original design was that of Scandinavian minimalism mixed with the dramatic architectural overtones so evident in Middle Eastern heritage. White wooden-slatted shutters embrace wide-arched glassless windows that afford spectacular views over the Indian Ocean. This open-to-nature approach to Kilindi's design provides the true essence of any stay. Detailed interiors have now been added to subtly enhance those diverse cultural inferences, but without detracting from the 'barefoot appeal' of this traveller's paradise. A falling water bar overlooks a large 25 m infinity pool which itself affords views out across the sparkling warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Dining takes place either on the alfresco terrace or even along the pristine white beach, which runs the length of the property. Accommodation is offered in 15 eastern-style domed Pavilions nestling among a 50-acre tropical garden, and are the perfect and intimate retreats for each and every guest. The Pavilions each have their very own private plunge pool, and possess extraordinary wet rooms with radiance showers that truly give the feeling of being at one with nature. The interiors of Kilindi remain faithful to the past while contemporary features adorn the place. With each Pavilion set in its own private tropical garden and served by a dedicated butler, privacy is guaranteed. The dedicated butler will offer you a wide selection of places to enjoy your breakfast, lunch and dinner. And should our guests wish to leave the oasis of tranquillity and calm of their private Pavilion, the butler can help, advise and arrange the many activities and excursions that Kilindi and the island offer. Kilindi Zanzibar is certainly a rarity and one that will reward all those who venture to experience all that it has to offer. A favourite with honeymooners and lovers, any stay at Kilindi will become both the memory of a lifetime and a standard to surpass.
