Famed for its vast open grasslands and exceptional wildlife sightings, Tanzania’s magnificent Serengeti National Park boasts 35 species of plains-dwelling game, as well as prolific bird life. Perhaps most significantly, it is also site of part of the famed Great Migration, an annual movement of wildebeest and other herbivores across the Greater Serengeti-Mara ecosystems, considered one of the greatest spectacles of the natural world. The &Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas camps attempt to anticipate the movements of the Great Migration, bringing guests as close as possible to the wildebeest action, as well as exploring magnificent resident game. Using only private campsites, these mobile camps are entirely intimate and exclusive, featuring spacious safari tents, each with a double bed, en-suite bathroom, separate toilet, and alfresco bucket shower. Redolent of classic safari style, custom-made Indian rugs, crisp linens, sparkling crystal and polished brass lend flair to the simplicity of camping. Carefully planned according to the projected movements of the Great Migration, the camps aim to bring guests within comfortable driving distance of the herds. However, the wildebeest masses move with the rains, which may occur at a different time each year, so it is not always possible to accurately predict where they will be. &Beyond’s expert guides will always try to place guests in the midst of the thronging wildebeest but, should the animals not appear when expected, the guides’ intimate knowledge of the ample resident game will ensure a rich game viewing experience.

Kirurumu Serengeti Camp is a luxury mobile camp, moved seasonally to take best advantage of the vast Serengeti. The camp is used as a base, a spring board for an early morning game drive, a break for a sumptuous lunch, a respite from the heat of the day and the finale to a day’s adventure where stories can be swapped around a fire. As a small and intimate camp the staff are on hand just to look after a very limited number of guests and so the level of attention and service is always excellent According to season, the camp moves to the scenically and outstandingly beautiful Moru Kopjes in June. Moru is the unique location for the Serengeti Rhino project and also by virtue of permanent water in the area boasts a large population of lion with densities approaching the Seronera area but unlike Seronera the area is not congested and it is much more remote and private. The resident game is plentiful and is the reason the lion population is high. The migration may or may not move through the area in June and the pattern of the migration is very difficult to determine in advance being subject to weather patterns and availability of water for the large herds. From late December to the end of March the camp moves to the Ndutu area of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The Ndutu 2 campsite area offers access to the Serengeti short grass plains for the great migration and specifically when the wildebeests are carving around mid February to early March. The lakes over essential water and which brings the game in from the surrounding planes for excellent wildlife viewing. The area is also very good for lion, cheetah, and excellent plains game along with the migration.
