Azura at Quilalea is the second luxury Indian Ocean retreat from Christopher and Stella Bettany. Just as the name suggests, it brings Azura’s trademark African-chic style to Quilalea Island; a private, wholly uninhabited island paradise surrounded by the pristine waters of a marine sanctuary. In keeping with the uninhabited nature of the island, the retreat consists of only nine seafront villas, accommodating up to 18 guests. The villas are built from natural coral stone and makuti thatch, and have all been revamped to increase comfort and make better use of the interior space, with natural finishes, indoor and outdoor showers, private decks stretching out to the beach, daybeds, and sun loungers for relaxing. Guests have a choice of three categories of villa, and the island may also be booked out in its entirety for a complete private island experience. Azura at Quilalea is paradise for lovers of marine life and offers snorkelling and scuba diving straight off the beach in front of the villas. Kayaking, deep-sea fishing, African spa experiences, exclusive picnics, and beach dinners can be organized and all guests also receive Azura’s trademark Mozambican butler and host service. Azura at Quilalea is a hidden gem, somewhere to retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life, with a relaxed and understated Robinson Crusoe castaway-style that belies the comforts and experiences on offer. Whilst the Quirimbas Archipelago stretches from Pemba to the Northern border with Tanzania, only the very southern part of the archipelago, where Quilalea is located, forms a fully protected marine sanctuary.

Ibo Island Lodge is the perfect place to explore the Quirimbas Archipelago National Park in Northern Mozambique. Ibo Island’s magic is overwhelming. Steeped in history, rich in culture and nominated as a potential World Heritage Site, the island dates back to the early 1600’s, making it one of the most ancient settlements in Mozambique. Since its role as one of the country’s central trading centres, Ibo has remained all but forgotten to the outside world for almost a century. Today you can wander around the mysterious town amongst forts and ancient romantic buildings with many fascinating stories just waiting to be retold. Ibo Island boasts much more than historical significance. This island is one of the most pristine destinations in Africa. The warm turquoise waters surrounding Ibo are inhabited by turtles and tropical fish; viewings of dolphins and whales are frequent whilst the bird life is abundant and varied. Here you will encounter idyllic beaches and explore rich coral reefs. Guests can also take to the water to discover the Quirimbas National Park in sailing and motorized dhows or quietly paddle through the mangroves in kayaks. The lodge has spectacular views over the waterfront and accommodates guests in beautifully decorated rooms. Three historic colonial mansions each over 150 years old with high lofty ceilings have been stylishly renovated to accommodate 14 en-suite bedrooms with hand crafted 4 poster beds and locally crafted furniture, various verandas, tropical gardens and a spectacular roof top restaurant that provides the ideal venue to watch the sun go down. On Ibo Island become immersed in the unchanged, ancient culture of Ibo and the chance to interact with wonderfully gentle islanders, or simply relax at one of the pools, refresh the senses with a massage and soak up the exotic atmosphere.
