Diedré and Salmon extend a warm welcome to all our guests. We feel fortunate to stay in this...
Diedré and Salmon extend a warm welcome to all our guests. We feel fortunate to stay in this beautiful part of our country and it’s our wish to share it with you. Villa Santuario was created and built after many years of staying in different parts of our country. For us it is a real sanctuary and we sincerely hope you will experience the same. The scenery in the midlands changes constantly, with its snowy winters, a paradise of colours in autumn and different shades of green in summer. It is an area that breathes tranquillity and peace, with soft rain and gentle mist hanging in the fold of the valleys. We have several dams, waterfalls and nature reserves in our immediate area. The southern Drakensberg is only an hour drive away, and while driving there, it's like an ever-changing picture unfolding before you. The Kamberg and Giants Castle area, which is virtually on our doorstep, is certainly the country’s best kept secret. Masses of birds, which include the Cape Vulture, the Lammergeyer vulture and different crane species, can be found here. The area is also a trout fisherman’s paradise. The central and northern Drakensberg, which was recently declared World Heritage Sites, are also a mere one hour and fifteen minutes drive from here. There are so many things to do and to view, you will never get bored. For example, the picturesque Valley of a Thousand Hills is worth exploring, not only for the scenery, but also for the outstanding art and restaurants. Pietermaritzburg is a beautiful city with stunning architecture. It is a city that offers you everything you could expect from a first class city, but without the rush. Hilton is on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg and it is a beautiful, romantic village with winding roads, lush vegetation and informal gardens. In the early years, Hilton used to be the summer hideaway for the rich people of Pietermaritzburg. Your accommodation will be in a very spacious and elegantly furnished studio, which consists of two bedrooms, one with a king size double bed and the other with two single beds. There is a third emergecy single bed in the living area. The bathroom has a bathtub, a large shower, a basin and a toilet. The Forest Stay unit consists of a bedroom with a queen size bed, a bathroom with a bath and shower, as well as a kitchen. The best accessories were chosen to compliment the bathroom. The kitchen is fully-equipped and the lounge and dining area were furnished your comfort in mind. There is also a working bay for business people or someone who feels the need to bring their laptop along. Many extras will pamper your stay with us, such as heaters, hot water bottles, hair dryers, bathrobes, soft towels and toiletries, as well as crisp and clean linen. There is a TV, books, magazines and a welcoming decanter with sherry. Just pack your bags and we will introduce you to life in the Zulu kingdom.

Kwela Lodge is the ideal getaway for the holiday maker or business traveller, nature lover and bird watcher - anyone wanting to relax and seeking tranquillity, peace and security in country surroundings for a weekend or longer stay. The original farmhouse was built in 1841 and belonged to Par Otto, one of the first settlers to the valley. Otto’s Bluff Mountain is named after him. In the fifties Otto's Bluff Farm - as Kwela Lodge was then called was a working farm with dairy cattle, maize and wattle tree plantations and a mill. In 1936/7 the movie King Solomon’s Mines based on Rider Haggard’s book was shot on location at the foot of Otto’s Bluff Mountain. Enjoy our beautiful gardens and trees which are home to an abundance of birds and make friends with our farm animals. Explore the unspoilt African bush on our property or simply relax at the pool and listen to the rustle of the palm leaves above you. Be inspired by the history of this magic place. The lodge is situated in country surroundings at the foot of Otto's Bluff Mountain with a stunning panoramic view over the Albert Falls Dam and Umgeni Valley - only 15 minutes from Pietermaritzburg, 20 minutes from Albert Falls Dam Reserve and 50 minutes from Durban.

A mere 15 minute meander from Pietermaritzburg, Ukuthula Lodge stands true to its title. From isiZulu, Ukuthula translates to ‘peace and calm’ and this 300-hectare game farm is definitely rest at its best. In the Karkloof foothills overlooking Albert Falls Dam, the view from each thatched villa is magnificent; from open grassland and African bushveld to steep valleys and gorges. Accommodation is offered in six thatched chalets, all elegantly decorated and furnished in neutral African colours making them a restful and relaxing space. The airy rooms open downstairs onto wooden viewing decks where you will find the wildlife almost close enough to touch. Each unit sleeps four guests. While the chalets are self-catering, meals can also be selected from the lodge’s wholesome farm menu and enjoyed in the privacy of your chalet, at the one of the viewing decks or in the farmhouse dining room. Delicious picnic baskets and barbeques can also be provided on request. A favourite spot is the Waterhole Boma perched on the hillside overlooking one of our dams, where you will see our shy marsh terrapins sunning themselves on the banks while red bishops flit among the reeds and the larger mammals from the tallest giraffe to the smallest baby warthogs gather to drink. Another idyllic spot is the Otter’s Den River Boma, where the otter’s spend lazy afternoons playing in the river with the call of the African fish eagle resounding overhead. A perfect place to relax with a book, do some fishing and enjoy sundowners. Ukuthula Lodge’s thriving wildlife includes nyala, impala, zebra, kudu, waterbuck, reedbuck, giraffe, duiker, wildebeest, red hartebeest, eland, otters, black-backed jackal, serval, caracal, and genet, to name but a few.

Pietermaritzburg South Africa

Pietermaritzburg Accommodation

This wonderful little city is often called 'the last outpost of the British Empire' by admirers and detractors alike. It's not really true, but its many red brick Victorian buildings do give the town a rather genteel air.

Situated in a hollow surrounded by hills, Pietermaritzburg lies on the edge of the rather lovely green Midlands, which is so well endowed with craft shops, restaurants, trout hatcheries, boutique breweries, cheese factories and every other form of bucolic delight that it has formed itself into a route called the Midlands Meander. Other nearby attractions include the scenic Howick Falls, and the Karkloof treetop canopy tour. There are excellent mountain biking trails in the area, some game farms and it’s not far from the Drakensberg. Cultural attractions include a number of museums, township tours and nearby battlefields. An interesting monument is the statue of Mahatma Gandhi on the spot where he was arrested for riding in a 'whites only' train carriage. He claimed that his career of passive resistance started then.

Pietermaritzburg is just short of 100km from Durban, with which it has very intimate ties. These are most notable in two very tough races, which are run between the cities. The Comrades Marathon is 98km long and follows the old national road. The other race is the Dusi Canoe Marathon, which is run on the Umsinduzi River every year.

This wonderful little city is often called 'the last outpost of the British Empire' by admirers and detractors alike. It's not really true, but its many red brick Victorian buildings do give the town a rather genteel air.
