If you are planning to go to the cherry festival, rather visit the cherry farms. The festival has many flea market type of stands and very few cherry stands. Street vendors are everywhere on the entrance to the festival, giving a dirty and unsafe impression. The cherry and cheese farms were wonderful destinations to visit but lie outside of Ficksburg. Ficksburg is not a town for tourists.
A gem in the Eastern Free State
Ficksburg lies in the heart of the Eastern Free State on the border with Lesotho. Here one can take day visits to the Katse Dam or to Afriski in the winter months to go snow skiing or even hiking in the Maluti Mountains.
