Explore the revamped young heart of Port Elizabeth. Jikeleza Backpackers is just a few streets away from buzzing nightlife. Clubs range from hip hop, African house to radio funk. Lounge in on street couches at the Cafés, sip cocktails or chow down on local fare. Visit live music and theatre shows, banks, post office, pubs and 24 hour shops. All you fancy is a brisk walk away. After a long day on the road, relax with a local movie, or chill in the tranquil shady garden and slap a steak on the braai. The friendly staff will help you book or get advice on anything to anywhere. Jikeleza Backpackers is an International Backpackers Hostel. You'll find it safe clean and comfortable offering a true African experience and South African hospitality. It is designed by travellers for travellers to meet in a home away from home atmosphere. The hostel has a reputation for making you feel welcome and is enthusiastically run by the owners and their manager. The old building with all its gleaming wood and warm, atmospheric charm is a stone’s throw from everything. The owners are fanatical about cleanliness and all the staffs are friendly and go out of their way to help you. The Backpackers is set right in the heart of the old historical Port Elizabeth city and right on the Donkin Heritage walking trail. Jikeleza Backpackers offers you a variety of accommodation. There are single rooms, double rooms with double bed and twin rooms with two single beds, three, four and five bed family/group rooms, dorms and camping. The hostel is never crowded and their dorms only have a maximum of seven beds and at times are smaller. The dorms are mixed, both male and female, and may not be suitable for some local holiday makers who are not conversant with traveling etiquette. The kitchen is fully fitted so that you can whip up a quick meal or cook up a storm. Jikeleza Backpackers has its own in-house travel desk and is the best place to get advice on anything to anywhere. They can arrange day trips to Addo Elephant National Park, lion safaris to Schotia, city and township tours, Baz Bus and Intercape Inter City Bus tickets, historical and heritage tours, transfers and overland trips and tours anywhere in Southern Africa. They also have specially priced accommodation and tour packages for backpackers and you can save quite a lot if you take one of these.

We specialise in group dormitory accommodation (schools, sports hroups etc.) as well as medium term contractors visiting the city. Why Cora Terrace; Not often will you have the opportunity to stay in a National Monument! This beautiful Georgian home was built in the 1850’s to house soldiers guarding the port of Port Elizabeth. Situated in picturesque surroundings, you can walk to the Old Fort, the Donkin Memorial and St. George’s botanical gardens. It is about 5 minute quick drive to the beach. For the sporting enthusiast, it is within walking distance to St. George’s cricket stadium, and about a 10 minute drive to the new Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Bathrooms are communal as no bedrooms are en-suite. We have self-catering facilities suitable for the individual and group. Alternatively, why don’t you rather let us prepare the meals? On request we offer home cooked meals that can be adapted to your requirements. Do you want guidance on activities when in Port Elizabeth. Once your booking is confirmed, we will help you design activities to make your trip to Port Elizabeth exciting and memorable. This is at no additional cost, although you would need to pay relevant entrance fees where required. Should you wish to have guided tours, we will also put you in contact with local, registered specialists. Remember to book early in advance as we do get busy during school terms and during events. We regret that due to the stairs, physically disabled guests cannot be accommodated.

Your itinerary: Day 1: Port Elizabeth – Garden Route – Knysna We depart from Port Elizabeth, also called the 'Friendly City' along the N2 national route to the Storms River with the impressive Paul Sauer Bridge across the valley, towering 139 m above the river. Our next stop is at Tsitsikamma National Park (Khoisan for “The place of much water”) stretching over 100 km of wild and rocky coastline, characterised by massive cliffs, narrow isolated beaches and shady indigenous forests along the river valleys. Now, truly in the famous Garden Route of the Cape, we traverse more magnificently scenic river valley passes to Knysna on the edge of the Knysna Lagoon with its entrance to the sea, guarded by two promontories known as the 'Heads'. The area also falls within a National Park proclaimed to conserve the extraordinary natural beauty of the Lakeland and adjacent indigenous forests. Knysna also offers shopping opportunities of unusual locally made art and craft, etc. - Overnight at Fish Eagle Lodge or similar. Day 2: Garden Route – George – Oudtshoorn We explore the lake areas, the Wilderness National Park and travel via the scenic Outeniqua Pass to Oudtshoorn, also known as the 'Feather Capital' of the world, as by far the largest concentration of ostrich farms in the world are found here. We visit the Cango Caves, regarded as one of South Africa's foremost natural wonders. The fascinating calcite caves comprise an underground wonderland of stalactites and stalagmites. - Overnight at La Plume Guest Lodge or similar. Day 3: Oudtshoorn – Mossel Bay – Cape Town After an early start we visit an ostrich show farm for some unique experiences, including ostrich racing. Our route to Mossel Bay takes us over the Outeniqua Mountains via the Robinson's Pass. Here we visit arguably the oldest Post Office in Africa, the Post Office Tree, and the site of the first landfall made by the Portuguese explorer Bartholomeu Dias in 1488. After an early lunch we travel to Swellendam, Grabouw and over the Sir Lowry's Pass to Cape Town where we arrive late afternoon.

We visit the Tsitsikamma National Park (Khoisan for 'The place of much water' stretching over one hundred kilometres of wild and rocky coastline characterised by massive cliffs, narrow isolated beaches and shady indigenous forests along the river valleys. Then we traverse through magnificently scenic river valley passes to Plettenberg Bay for a short visit. Continue to Knysna. We join a sundowner cruise on the lagoon. - Overnight at Fish Eagle Lodge or similar. Dinner included. Day 2: Knysna – George – Oudtshoorn Spend the morning in Knysna visiting the “Heads” etc. Knysna also offers shopping opportunities of unusual locally made art and craft, etc. This afternoon we experience some of the most magical views on the Garden Route and Wilderness National Park and scenic viewpoints along the way. We travel over the Outeniqua Mountains to the Little Karoo where we visit the Cango Wildlife Ranch and Valley of Ancients, an endangered species breeding facility extraordinaire. Then travel to our hotel. - Overnight at La Plume Guest House. Breakfast and dinner included. Day 3: Oudtshoorn – Mossel Bay After breakfast we visit an Ostrich Show Farm for some unique experiences including ostrich racing. A ride on a back of an ostrich is not for the fainthearted. We visit the Cango caves, regarded as one of South Africa's foremost natural wonders. The fascinating calcite caves comprises an underground wonderland of stalactites and stalagmites. Visit Oudtshoorn, also called the "Feather capital" of the world, as over ninety percent of the world's ostrich farms are found here. Continue to Mossel Bay. - Overnight at the Point Hotel. Breakfast and dinner included. Day 4: Mossel Bay – Swellendam – Hermanus – Cape Town We visit arguably the oldest post office in Africa, the Post Office Tree and the site of the first landfall, made by the Portuguese explorer Bartholomew Dias in 1488. Continue to Hermanus, the best place in the World to spot Whales from land – (July to Dec).
