Situated on a spectacular stretch of coastline near Herolds Bay, Oubaai Golf Course offers a championship layout just 10 km from George Airport. Boasting the first Ernie Els signature course in South Africa, the design presents a challenge to all golfers and is a tribute to South Africa’s much-loved player. It is rated by Els as one of his favourite courses on the planet. The traditional Links layout has nine holes out and nine holes back with a unique two-tee operation. The signature hole on the course is the par-3 17th framed by the ocean and with the green below. Oubaai Golf Course is known for its high quality golfing and exceptional service. Visitors keep returning to this challenging and enjoyable course with great views and memorable experiences.

One of Fancourt’s renowned golf courses, The Links is unique to South Africa. The undulating dune-style landscape presents a demanding challenge in all weather conditions. Recognized for the wonderful year round condition and attention to detail, The Links is perennially popular and has some extraordinary holes. One of these is the par-3 second, with its bunker in the centre of the enormous green. The overall effect is balance in terms of corresponding length, position of hazards and shot values. ‘We included the bunker to break it up, but the front left of the green is severely sloped, so the golfer can use the contours to get the ball near the flag. You will never be stymied by the trap’ says Gary Player. The tees and fairways are a mix of Kentucky Blue, Rye, Fescue and Bent, with predominant Bent greens, allowing for the Pitch and Run shot and to enable the ball to 'chase' along the fairways. The atmospheric clubhouse is conveniently situated metres from the 18th green. Terraced areas and huge picture windows take advantage of the awesome course and mountain vistas.

Forest, ferns, fynbos and mountains will knock your socks off in this magnificent Garden Route reserve. The Outeniqua Nature Reserve lies near George and is easily accessible from Mossel Bay, Knysna and Oudtshoorn. The 38 000-hectare reserve is set in the rugged Outeniqua Mountain ranges which run parallel to the coastline. It lies between the high-rainfall coastal region and the dry Little Karoo. As a result the plant life is diverse, with the moist southern slopes predominantly covered with beautiful mountain fynbos. In September and October the proteas and ericas cloak the hillsides with spectacular blooms. The northern slopes are much drier, covered with hardy, interesting Karoo veldt. Bushmen paintings of animals, hunters and honeycombs may be found on secluded rock faces throughout the reserve, providing clues to their culture and lifestyle in this region. The Attakwaskloof in the west carries the historical trails of elephant herds that no longer roam here. There’s also evidence of early explorers and settlers carved into the rocks by ox-wagons trekking over the craggy mountain range. Animals to spot include klipspringer, grey rhebuck, small rodents, baboon and the elusive leopard. Large birds of prey including the black eagle are frequently seen. Cape sugarbirds, glittering sunbirds and other fynbos species can often be seen flitting between protea bushes. A number of day hikes depart from the reserve office in Witfontein. Be prepared for extremely changeable weather. Those who really want to get away from it all can do the two-day Tierkop Trail and sleep in the rudimentary hut on Tierkop peak.

The setting that takes in mountains, water and wildlife characterises the magnificent Fancourt Outeniqua Golf Course, one of two 18-hole Parkland layouts at Fancourt. It’s hard to beat a round here and all levels of golfers will find it an excellent challenge for its design and fine conditioning alone. Designed by Grand Slam golfing legend Gary Player, it is similar to Montagu, and offers a variety of tees from which to play. Play is restricted to hotel visitors, members and guests to ensure overcrowding but it’s advisable to book in advance to ensure your required tee-off time. All golfers can warm-up on the full-length range and chipping and bunker practice area before playing. A handicap certificate, soft spikes and appropriate golf attire is required. Golf carts are available for hire, weather permitting.

Fancourt’s Montagu Golf Course is a much loved Parkland course that is frequently ranked as the number-one golf course in South Africa. Recently it had a major revamp with numerous holes being redesigned and two new additions. The course never gets cramped and there is more than enough time to appreciate the Fancourt golfing experience as it is restricted to members, their guests and resort visitors. It is recommended to book your desired tee time however. Serious players and anyone in need of secret training can warm up before playing on the full-length range as well as the chipping and bunker practice area. A handicap certificate, soft spikes and appropriate golf attire is required. Golf carts are available for hire, weather permitting.

Kingswood is an urban golf estate located in the heart of George. Undoubtedly the Sally Little signature18-hole golf course designed by Danie Obermeyer is the prime attraction, but there are a host of other leisure activities that you can enjoy - all in a setting of breathtaking, natural beauty. Take a trip down memory lane at the Outeniqua Transport Museum. You will be able to see 13 different steam locomotives including a narrow gauge, the Emil Kessler- Johannesburg’s first steam locomotive and the impressive GL Garrett. Also on view are beautiful old carriages such as a coach from the Royal Train of 1947, Paul Kruger’s coach and private saloons. A photographic exhibition displays stunning photos of South African steam. There’s also train travel poetry and displays of crockery and cutlery previously used on main line trains and station restaurants. Set in the heart of the Garden Route, the George Golf Club course is a beautifully manicured, 72 par course with 18 holes and bent greens. The course rating for men is either 70 (club – 5774m) or 72 (championship – 6100m), while that for the ladies is 72 (5188m).Visitors are welcome daily, with the exception of Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, which are reserved for members and their guests. Booking for golf is essential. Please note that no group bookings are allowed on Wednesdays and Saturdays.Caddies and motorised golf carts are available for hire at the Pro Shop, as well as clubs and trolleys. Golf carts must be booked well in advance due to a small fleet of carts available at the club. The Pro Shop also sells golfing equipment.

Dinner theatre aficionados in George have a new state-of-the-art theatre to visit for good times, delicious food and quality entertainment. The Kalahari Restaurant and Theatre opened its doors in September 2010 to cater for discerning theatre fans and music lovers in the Garden Route. The 400 seater theatre will stage the latest productions from the main circuit in a warm and friendly environment. The theatre complex houses a separate bar and a 120-seater family restaurant with an outdoor deck. A beautiful grand piano mounted on a circular stage steals the limelight in the restaurant which also functions as a cocktail bar and entertainment area. Bookings for shows can be done at the theatre or through Computicket. Patrons are advised to pre-order snack platters and pizzas to enjoy in the theatre.

Home to rhino, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, eland, bontebuck and numerous antelope, Botlierskop provides visitors the opportunity to view free roaming wildlife from the safety of 4x4 vehicles in the Garden Route. Named for one of the dramatic rock formations on the reserve, the beautiful setting is also the sanctuary for two elephants that joined the Botlierskop team, Sam and Tsotsi, rescued orphans from the Zambezi Valley in Zimbabwe. Guests are able to experience riding on elephant back and interacting with these remarkable creatures. Knowledgeable guides share the wonders of Botlierskop and up close encounters with four rescued and rehabilitated lions, rhino, buffalo, giraffe and many of the 1 800 animals.

The lovely Little Brak Beach and Little Brak River mouth are both just 6 km from Mossel Bay. The golden sandy beach is immaculate and perfect for long romantic strolls. The river is great for water sports such as water skiing, canoeing, boating and fishing. During the winter months the coastline is a prime spot for whale watching.

The Point is a happening, vibey beach and dramatic rocky point within central Mossel Bay. Here you can stroll for 3 kilometers along a walkway across the rocky coastline or venture on the 15 kilometer long St Blaize hiking trail to Dana Bay. Kids enjoy the sandy play areas and small tidal pool on the beach. There's also a long, natural tidal pool great for swimming in front of the Point Hotel. Home to numerous restaurants, bars, an aquarium, the Khoi-San Cave and St Blaize Lighthouse, The Point also has some great waves. Two popular restaurants look right onto the spectacular surfing spots. So after shredding the waves you can kick back and grab some grub while watching the action!

Mossel Bay lies on the other side of the protruding peninsula of Cape St Blaize, a rocky headland that has long been a danger to ships at night. This dramatic spot houses the elegant white Victorian lighthouse that still functions as a beacon to navigators. Built in 1864, Cape St Blaize Lighthouse was one of the only two lighthouses manned 24 hours daily on the South African Coastline. Until the late 1970s a clockwork system turned the lens and required a lighthouse keeper to wind it up every three hours. Now fully automated, a team of lighthouse keepers are still employed to keep a constant radio watch and undertake regular meteorological duties. The St Blaize Hiking Trail is a wonderfully scenic combination of craggy coastline, interesting caves and rock formations, sweeping ocean views and pretty fynbos.Starting at the Khoi San Cave at The Point, it follows the coastline for 13.5 km to Dana Bay and usually takes about 4 hours at a moderate pace.The trail has recently been upgraded and is a comfortable walk along a contour path and through fine stands of coastal fynbos. Along the way there are a few spots for a cooling swim in rock pools or a small sandy beach.On a good day the views from the path are spectacular and you have a good chance of spotting whales, dolphins and even sharks in the water below. Peak whale watching season is from June to October and dolphins can be seen all year round.Hot Tips:Arrange transport from Dana Bay unless you are up for a mega hike and return along the trail back to The Point. Children should be accompanied by adults. Some of the sections are fairly exposed and care should be taken on steep sections. Watch out for waves at the sea caves and rocky sections of this rugged shoreline. Avoid hiking this trail in high winds. View a life-sized replica of the caravel that brought master mariner and explorer Bartolomeu Dias to the shores of Mossel Bay from Portugal. Diaz is reputed to be the first European explorer to set foot on South African soil in Mossel Bay on 3 February 1488. He named Mossel Bay ‘The Watering Place of Saint Blaize’ after collecting fresh water from the spring on the day of the patron Saint Blaize. Today the spring still flows and can be seen in the Diaz Museum complex grounds. The caravel replica sailed into Mossel Bay in 1987 with much festivity, a gift from the Government of Portugal. Another treasure is a 1595 map of Mossel Bay by the early Dutch sailor, Cornelius de Houtman. Also on view are interesting artefacts and displays of maritime history during the time of the early Portuguese, Dutch and English navigators. History buffs and anyone keen to get clued up about South Africa’s heritage should make this museum part of their Garden Route itinerary. The Hartenbos Museum is one of the oldest museums in Mossel Bay and focuses on the Great Trek. Interesting dioramas and exhibitions showcase beautiful antiquities that give evidence of the lifestyle of the Voortrekker pioneers during the mid 1800s. Bored with driving around in the stuffy car? Explore Mossel Bay with zero carbon footprint! In Cecil Shepherd Road you will find easy access to the St. Blaize Trail. The 15km trail follows the coastline between Dana Bay and Mossel Bay and is an easy hike. The views are breathtaking!If you stroll for 30 minutes towards the Point you will reach the St. Blaize Cave, a Khoi San midden dating back to the Iron Age. The stretch from Cecil Shepherd Road to the cave has awesome views of the Indian Ocean and various fynbos, birds and animals.And the fun doesn't stop here - from the Point you’ll have several options. You could explore the city centre and Mossel Bay’s historical buildings – the Bartholomew Diaz Museum Complex is definitely worth a visit. Feeling peckish? Soak up the sun's rays and dine al fresco on the patio at Jazzbury’s Restaurant on Marsh Street. You could also embark on a fascinating boat trip to the seal colony.

A new wine growing area has been certified in the Outeniqua Mountains. Cool mountain mists keep summer temperatures moderate and create a long ripening season for the Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. The wines hold great promise for a region yet to be fully discovered and potentially well suited to the production of fine South-African wines.
