Description

Between the Ugab and the Huab Rivers in southern Damaraland lies a vast and unspoilt wilderness area, boasting magnificent desert scenery, unusual geological formations, archaeological sites and a unique variety of desert fauna & flora. This is also the southernmost roaming-ground of the rare black rhino and the desert elephant.

Here you will find the Twyfelfontein Conservancy and the Mowani Mountain Camp. The word M’wane means 'Place of God', and here you will find the true meaning of the words – peace and tranquility.

Mowani nestles amongst the majestic boulders of this beautiful area on a high spot, commanding distant views over the ancient landscape. Great care has been taken with the design of the recreational areas, giving the impression of an African Village.

The luxury-tents are elegantly decorated with furnishings especially designed for convenience and comfort.

Guests can relax around a man-made rock pool that has been skillfully carved out of the local stone, blending in perfectly with the natural surroundings.

Daytime activities include guided nature drives, in search of the elusive desert elephant, guided nature walks in and around the camp. We also offer excursions to the Twyfelfontein engravings as well as excursions to the Petrified Forest.

Envisage comfort, solitude and relaxation and you envisage Mowani Mountain Camp. Visions of Africa.

Elephant Nature Drive:
At Mowani Mountain Camp, we offer our guests the option of going on an Elephant Nature Drive, which can last from 3 – 6 hours. The drive incorporates exploring the surrounding terrain in search of these magnificent beasts.

There are only two groups of desert dwelling Elephants in the world, one in Mali and the other in Namibia! These elephants have adapted to their dry and often sandy conditions by having smaller body mass and larger feet in comparison to other elephants.

Eighty years ago, more than 3000 elephants seasonally lived in Namibia’s Kunene Region, mostly in the ephemeral rivers. Hunters and poachers killed most of them by the early 1980’s. Over the past 20 years, MET, NGOs and Community Game Guards have protected them, so approximately 600 elephants roam the region today……..

Remember that elephants have mediocre eyesight, good hearing and excellent smell. And they can move FAST! They can accelerate from 0 – 40km/h in less than a second!

Twyfelfontein Rock Engravings:

Twyfelfontein is world renowned for its beautiful rock engravings. The rocks tend to be eclipsed by the engravings and artwork, but they also give evidence of fascinating events. It should not be overlooked that the engravings of Twyfelfontein were only made because of the extremely smooth and flat rock surfaces, which are of course of geological origin. Geology and rock art is therefore deeply connected here.
