Ian Pritchard sailed a small wooden boat into Watamu Bay in 1952. He had a look around, saw that he’d landed in paradise, and promptly bought the plot of land upon which now sits one of Kenya’s best-loved beachfront hotels. Ian was called in to service to fight the Mau Mau further down the coast and upon his return, he found his landed boat rotten and useless for the water. Unphased, he turned his vessel into an extremely popular beach bar, and Ian’s original boat still stands as the main bar of Ocean Sports Resort.
The rooms at Ocean Sports are all sea-facing. Some have views of the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean while others, set more deeply into the resort’s 6.5 hectares, enjoy serene views over our well-kept, colourful gardens. Guests sleep peacefully in fully air-conditioned rooms, where the large beds are draped with mosquito netting in the early evening. Each room also has a unique African-style en-suite bathroom with a shower and toilet.
Hotel accommodation consists of 39 fully air-conditioned, en-suite rooms set back above Watamu beach. We have accommodation options to suit everyone, including twin rooms, doubles and triples, as well as a Family Room and a Suite. There is also Ocean Cottage, a charming three-bedroom house positioned right on the Watamu beach, available for short term lets on a self-catering basis.
Whether you see yourself sipping cocktails and soaking up the sun from the comfort of our beachfront bar, or hurtling through the Arabuko Sokoke Forest on a mountain bike, Ocean Sports Resort offers something for everyone. If you are looking for a relaxed and friendly taste of Africa, then look no further. We are proud to be one of the most established hotels in Watamu Bay, one of the finest locations for a beach holiday in Kenya.
