Sited on the slopes of the Thyolo Mountain, this historic tea planter’s bungalow is a relaxed, family-friendly retreat surrounded by lush, protected, subtropical rainforests. With its beautiful manicured gardens and panoramic views, Chawani has been sensitively refurbished to retain the rustic character and charm which has made this property enormously popular with visitors to the highlands for decades.

The house consists of four rooms, each providing comfortable accommodation; the main bedroom is en-suite while the other three rooms share a bathroom. A fully equipped kitchen is available for self-catering. With fire-heated water systems and screed floors, Chawani is typical of farm living and what it may lack in design features and polished finishes, it more than makes up for in character and comfort. While self-catering rates are available, our team of staff at the house will take care of your every need, and we offer rates inclusive of wonderful meals prepared using fresh estate produce.

Chawani is surrounded by the protected evergreen forests which are host to a variety of birds, making the property an ideal choice for birding enthusiasts. Domwe Island is the largest unpopulated island in Lake Malawi, with a circumference of 11 km and a highest point of 400 m above lake level. It is separated from the main land by the narrow Ilala Gap which, due to fluctuations in lake level over the millennia, has been dry on several occasions. As a result, Domwe Island, unlike all other Lake Malawi islands, is well populated with mammals which have migrated to the island during these dry times.

Domwe Island Adventure Camp is basic, yet exclusive. It lies behind a small beach on the island’s west side. The camp is run on a self-catering basis and guests can make use of the kitchen facilities to prepare their own meals. The kitchen is fully equipped with fridges, pots and pans, crockery and cutlery. Accommodation consists of three fully furnished safari tents and two tent sites, complemented by a dining area with bar and a water sports gazebo. Domwe Island is part of the Lake Malawi National Park and Domwe Island Camp is a member of the Wilderness Safaris Portfolio.
