Klein Windhoek Travel Guide

Klein Windhoek - Many, many years ago the seeds of Klein Windhoek were planted by German restaurateur, wine maker and pioneer tobacco farmer John Ludwig. He played a considerable role in cultural, business and public life and is often considered to be the founder of Klein Windhoek. He died in Windhoek on 27th February 1913. On the 1st March he became the first person to be buried in the then Klein Windhoek cemetery. His wife Lida, who died in December 1954, is buried beside him. Since the era of John Ludwig a lot has changed in the leafy suburb of Klein Windhoek! It has flourished into an extravagant modern day exurbia. The saying goes “there’s a lot in a name” and this is particular evident with regard to Klein Windhoek. The word “klein” originates from the Afrikaans language meaning small or little. And that is exactly what describes Klein Windhoek best; it is indeed “little” Windhoek – a smaller version of our capital city, but with all the services and features offered by its bigger counterpart! Each and every element of Windhoek can be found in Klein Windhoek. Klein Windhoek is characterized by a proliferation of German style commercial buildings and houses surrounded by gorgeous gardens creating a wonderful ambience. This is complimented by safety and cleanliness that make Klein Windhoek an ideal destination for anyone - be it a family, couple or corporate businessman. During the day the Klein Windhoek offers European cafe culture type coffee shops, restaurants where German cuisine dominates, but Namibian influence and culture bearing a wonderful sense of pride, hope and ambition can be found in many restaurants! Nightlife in Klein Windhoek has grown with the population, with a decent amount of restaurants, bars and pubs. For the less active Klein Windhoek is a great place to wile away the time while sipping (or gulping) a cold beer. For one’s daily needs and wants Klein Windhoek offers doctors surgeries, banks, (with 24hr ATM's) pharmacies, supermarkets, bakeries, mini-malls, laundry services, car rentals, travel agencies, and a variety of shops. Contrary to the bigger Windhoek central business district, the stress of traffic and parking difficulties is non-existent – as an extra bonus you have no need to worry about the odd uninvited traffic officer sliding you a parking ticket! There are plenty of places to stay both in and around Klein Windhoek, these ranges from backpacker hostels, through bed and breakfasts and guesthouses to lodges. Avis Dam is a stones throw away where one can absorb the magnificent views and tranquility of the dam. To top it all off; Klein Windhoek being on the way to the airport, allows you to grab a quick drink or delicious and mouth-watering breakfast an hour or two before your flight, leaving you with that final splendid memory of a wonderful stay in Namibia!

Suburb of Peacefulness - The early settlements of Windhoek came about because of the water from the hot springs. In the mid-1800's Captain Jan Jonker Afrikaner and his followers established a settlement near one of the main hot springs, located in the present-day Klein-Windhoek, an upper-class suburb of Windhoek. He built a stone church that held 500 people, which was also used as a school. Present-day Windhoek was founded on 18 October 1890, when Kurt Von Francois lay the foundation stone of the fort, which is now known as the Alte Feste (Old Fortress). During the next fourteen years Windhoek developed slowly, with only the most essential government and private buildings being erected. In Klein-Windhoek, plots were allocated to settlers, who started farming on a small scale with fruit, tobacco and dairy cattle. Klein Windhoek today, is still to be considered the most popular suburb, because of the quietness, beauty and tranquility. The suburb is situated along the Eastern Khomas Mountains with large Thorn Trees, Jakaranda Trees and Eucalyptus Trees. There are a variety of food stores, shops, pharmacies, post office, restaurants, accommodation establishments and much more. The famous Joe's Beerhouse in Nelson Mandela Avenue is not to be missed. Bougainvilla is an upmarket Niche Shopping Centre built like a little Village. Beautiful fountain, huge Craft Store, with a good selection of shops found only there. Coffee shop, and craft lessons. Holds annual Craft markets, Handmade Doll displays, Easter Craft Markets and is famous for its huge X-mass bazaar. The Stellenbosch Wine Bar and Bistro is very popular. Klein Windhoek is also situated only 5 minutes drive from the City Centre and easy accessible entering Windhoek from the International Airport.
