Mount Park Guest Farm

41 Reviews
Sleeps 87 in 13 rooms

Mount Park Guest Farm is situated in the beautiful upper Dargle region of KwaZulu Natal Midlands at the foot of the Inhlosane Mountain. This 344 hectare working beef farm consists of a diverse combination of grasslands, pastures, over 40 hectares of indigenous forest, wetlands and mountain, providing habitats for a large variety of bird species. One of the forests inhabitants is the rare Tree Hyrax. You may be lucky to hear its distinctive call at night.

We offer self-catering accommodation in a century old farmhouse, Yellowwood Cottage, Rose Cottage, in two Cabins and have camping sites. Simple catering is offered in the Bull & Speir restaurant on request. This is all situated in a large old garden, intersected with small streams and a large old oak tree, ideal for relaxing on a sunny day.

In the garden is a small dam stocked with trout, which is ideal for kids to fish and swim in. Adults are also welcome to throw a line.

For the more active there are a number of walks through the forests, up the mountain, down to the vlei or a short stroll to the historic graveyard, in a grove of yellowwood trees.

Perhaps an apt way to describe Mount Park is an ‘Olde Worlde’ delight.

WESSA - Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve

Welcome to WESSA - Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve; this beautiful reserve occupies 917-hectares of...
Welcome to WESSA - Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve; this beautiful reserve occupies 917-hectares of land and is home to many indigenous plants, mammals and reptiles. Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve offers guests self-catering accommodation, walking trails and rustic bush camps.

Walking trails range in time from half an hour to five hours, where the Grassland trail offers the greatest diversity in plant life and bird species as well as enabling you to have very close encounters with the giraffe and wildebeest. It is approximately 8 km in length with thicket along the river, acacia woodland and opens out to the most beautiful African savannah bushveld. The trails are mostly undulating or very steep and not for the faint-hearted and are mostly of a circular nature.

Dwarf’s Dawdle trail takes you on an exciting expedition through a forest hanging on the side of a large sandstone and dolerite cliff. The forest walks allow you to smell and feel the moisture and humidity and to enjoy dainty forest carpets of ferns and flowers. The insect life is abundant and you are sure to collect many spiders’ webs as you walk, don’t be alarmed even they have tremendous beauty sometimes being gold in colour or with suspended water droplets. Watch out for the elusive rock dassie and nerina trogon and hear the mournful trumpeter hornbill. If you are fortunate you may even encounter the rock climbers scrambling over the rock-faces like spiders with their appendages stretched wide to make use of every foothold.

Shelter Falls is the first little valley closest to the chalets and allows you to do one of the two short walks down to the Cascades or Shelter Falls waterfalls. Alternatively you may want to bring old shorts and try the natural “bum slide” where it’s hard to land gracefully in the tumbling stream. The reserve has overnight wooden bush camps and these camps take you right back to basics where the silence is deafening. Fully equipped units are also available which have beds and lighting, and a kitchenette.

Don’t miss out on coming to one of the best-kept secrets in the Midlands, and enjoy watching the sun rise at the ever popular view site and being caught up in that amazing view.

Thistledown Country House is known for its hospitality, gracious accommodation and fine dining. The farmhouse was built in 1937 by Jack Shaw, one of four legendary, unbeaten Springbok polo-playing brothers of that time and lovingly restored by the Maguires.

Jack's vision lives on! A back-drop of pristine indigenous forest , the second largest tract in South Africa - and a view across beautiful gardens to rolling hills and farm land.

Relax on the covered L-shaped veranda, watch for the 129 bird species in the area, the rare Samango monkey and the endangered Karkloof Blue Butterfly. Wander the 20 acre property in search of a variety of fauna and flora, including the crowned guinea fowl, crowned and black eagles and buck.

Or hit the adventure trail! The Midlands Meander starts on your doorstep! Discover arts, crafts and the unusual as well as the handmade/homemade and exotic. Hit the hiking or cycling trail through indigenous forest or take-off on the Karkloof Canopy Tour.

The five double en-suite bedrooms are individually decorated, including many unique pieces. A restored bath from the Imperial Hotel, Pietermartizburg, said to have been used by the Prince of Wales; Andrew Walford basins - one set into a giant Bluegum tree trunk; another bedroom has its own open fireplace being very popular on bracing winter nights!
Bedtime is a pleasure! Crisp white linen, down duvets and large white, wrap-around towels. In-room heating in winter and large sash windows to open in summer.

At every turn you will experience elegant country living at Thistledown. Make sure that you're "home for dinner" at least once during your stay, but remember to book in advance and ask about the fabulous fixed menu for that evening.
Thistledown's dinners are prepared personally by Norma and always start with a beautifully laid table, candlelight and a steaming hot towel, before moving onto a three or four course meal, cosmopolitan in nature, perhaps with a Japanese accent.

A Thistledown dinner is one to remember.
