Stonecutters Lodge is a holiday, trout fishing and conference venue of exceptional quality. Travel to the Mpumalanga Highlands, just 2.5 hours from OR Tambo International Airport, and stay in this 4 Star graded lodge. The lodge lies between Dullstroom and Lydenburg, in the heart of South Africa’s fly and trout fishing territory. Whether you are planning a holiday or weekend away, organizing a small conference or looking for excellent trout fishing, Stonecutters will accommodate you in superlative style.

The lodge lies in a beautiful setting between mountains and river, and offers a base for malaria-free holidays and tours to nearby game lodges and well-known tourist attractions. Stonecutters is also an ideal stopover for the Kruger National Park and the many private game lodges, and is accessed by just 1 km of dirt road off the main Dullstroom/Lydenburg R540.

Accommodation at Stonecutters is of the highest standard, with each facility providing a different ambience. Stonecutters can sleep up to 22 guests on the estate and the lodge is fully serviced and equipped. Selected DStv channels, SABC and e-TV channels are available for guests' enjoyment.

The lodge comprises family houses, Stone Cottage and the Trout House, while The Cobbles studios are ideal for couples. Recently refurbished, the lodge is furnished and equipped to the highest standards. Dinners and breakfasts are available by prior arrangement.

Stone Manor is the gathering point for guests at Stonecutters. The luxurious building houses the reception rooms and dining area, the pub, and the conference boardroom. A large fireplace dominates the double-volume lounge and dining area, where approximately 20 guests can dine in comfort. Furnishings are stylish throughout, impressing even the most discerning guests. The Cat’s Whiskers pub, with its cosy fireplace and DStv, can be a great place to meet new friends.

Stone Manor is set in a natural garden where a bubbling waterfall cascades into an indigenous pond. The patio fronting the house is a shaded outdoor area for meals and relaxation, where guests can enjoy breakfast or sundowners on the wooden deck jutting over the water.

Stonecutters is ideal for exclusive management meetings, strategic planning sessions and team-building getaways. The boardroom is well equipped, including data projector for big screen projection of presentations, videos, DVDs and DStv, and up to 20 delegates can be seated in a variety of configurations. Day conferences are catered for, and a comprehensive office provides backup photocopying and printing, as well as fax and e-mail facilities.

There is a selection of varied team-building activities to choose from. With the excellent waters available at the lodge, a fly-fishing clinic with expert tuition can be arranged, including a competition with prizes. Stonecutters have hosted numerous blue-chip businesses from various industries and delegates are assured of exclusivity and personal service from management and staff. If you are planning that special occasion, be it a birthday, engagement party or a small wedding, Stonecutters is an ideal small venue sleeping 22 people sharing.

The Stonecutter’s waters, two dams and 3 km of river, are fully managed and this, coupled with a generous re-stocking programme, ensures excellent fishing. 'Catch and Release’ is encouraged for all river fish, and trout caught and taken from the dams are charged for. Only fly-fishing equipment and methods are permitted, and fly-fishing clinics can be arranged. Regrettably, day visitors are not permitted to fish these waters.

Forest Creek Lodge & Spa

Sleeps 20 in 8 rooms

Forest Creek nestles in a gorge of the Steenkampsburg Mountains, set in a private nature reserve of the Mpumalanga escarpment.
Forest Creek nestles in a gorge of the Steenkampsburg Mountains, set in a private nature reserve of the Mpumalanga escarpment.

The gorge is softened only by a blanket of shrubs and trees which have grown in this malaria-free zone over millennia. It is only when one gets to the gate of Forest Creek Lodge that the rock-strewn grassland is left behind, one climbs up, and up, and enter this little enchanted world. For the international traveller, Forest Creek Lodge is an ideal place to relax and unwind after a long flight, a mere 130 km to the Kruger National Park, enjoy the treatments in the private Forest Spa, or just enjoy the tranquility of the bush. A private airstrip is located 8 km from the farm, from which we provide transfers to the lodge.

At Forest Creek, guests will dine on a four-course d'hôte dinner served in our candle-lit dining room, as well as a choice of five-breakfast menus. We also have a small menu for lunch and weather permitting, we will cook on the braai. For those who wish to hike, lunch packs are available, and for those who have special diets, we request that you inform us prior to your arrival.

The water at Forest Creek comes from a spring, and we will be bottling our own Forest Creek spring water. Forest Creek boasts a huge fireplace and again weather permitting, guests can enjoy meals and drinks outside on the veranda overlooking the valley. We are situated half way down the Steenkampberg mountain range, at an altitude ideally suited to the rapid growth of Rainbow and Brown trout.

Our cold, clear perennial stream feeds the trophy dam in which these lovely fish abide in a truly beautiful setting. The dam is approximately a half hour walk from the lodge or can be reached by 4x4 vehicles, leaving a 10-minute walk.

We practice catch and release of fish hooked, and rods are available for hire. One of our unique activities at Forest Creek is the hiking trails in the “Cloud Forest”. The trails are designed for the entire family, and are most suitable for the even not-so-fit person.

Under this canopy of trees and at the edge of the mountain, one feels very small in comparison to the magical views. The walk to the waterfall is approximately 2 km, winding through the forest and criss-crossing the stream in several places under the canopy of large indigenous trees. One is likely to hear the baboons barking and spot the odd bush buck or Red duiker and see the Cinnamon doves, Narina trogon's and loeries that frequent the forest. In the wetter months, the ferns, orchids and wild mushrooms offer spectacular opportunities for the more photographic inclined. A tree platform, built in a large fig tree above the forest canopy, is an ideal stop for birders or to simply relax and enjoy a picnic.

Scattered in the forest are remnants of old stone structures, some of which are supposedly several thousand years old and are under study at present. The forest is beautiful, friendly and safe. On this magnificent piece of land we hope we have catered for everyone, from luxury guest suites at the Main Lodge to the Forest Cottage and Bee Eater self-catering options. Forest Creek Lodge is also a haven for honeymooners, celebrating your first, fifth or fiftieth, you will be inspired by the romance of this incredibly exclusive, private place. Activities offered are bush baths, a forest spa, gazebo romantic private dinner, hiker’s picnic, lazy picnic, jet skiing, elephant rides, hiking, trout fishing, bird-watching, horse riding, mountain biking, clay pigeon shooting, and game drives., Forest Creek Lodge Dullstroom.

If you take the self-catering option you are welcome to book meals and activities at the lodge, we supply firewood.
