Situated in the valley of Middelplaas near De Rust, Die Gat Guest House is a farmstead and historic monument owned by the Schoeman family since the early 1800s. Characteristics of the old homestead, such as the paint of German origin on the interior walls of the voorkamer (lounge), the original architectural form of the house and the picturesque environment have ensured that many a South African film has been shot here.

The guest rooms in the outbuildings, previously the school where the Schoeman children were educated, the cart-shed turned winepress, or even an ox wagon used by earlier generations, have been suitably furnished to give you a unique experience of the outdoors.

A visit to the farm and the daily routine, where you get to know the ostrich with its fatal kick, and a visit to the labourers and their families ensure that you get to know the people and life on a typical Klein Karoo farm. The tranquility and peacefulness of Die Gat ensures an unforgettable sleep. You can even sleep with doors wide open so as not to miss the grumbling of ostriches. You can also relax at the special pool of Die Gat, with its beautiful view of the majestic surroundings.

This privately owned, 215 hectare piece of heaven known as Toorfontein lies in a valley surrounded by crimson hills known as Enon Conglomerate Formations. The luxury tented camp lies snuggled against the slopes near a large, sheer rock face with views across the valley and the Little Karoo.

The entertainment area is above a fully equipped kitchen and sheltered by an Enon Conglomerate overhang. You can sit back and reflect on the mysticism of the mountains and the natural beauty and tranquility of the valley, with no sound but birdsong and perhaps the bark of a baboon or forlorn call of a jackal.

Raised wooden walkways meander among the underhang of the red mountains to four permanent luxury tents and cabins set on elevated wooden decks and to the entertainment/braai area.

Toorfontein has remained largely untouched with its enchanted fountain still flowing past the campsite as it has for millennia. Birds and bats frequent the rock overhangs as they have been doing for thousands of years, and small game hide out in the spekboom thickets of the valley. At night the patter of small, padded feet can be heard on the wooden decks as a clan of mongoose scan the camp for food. Spend the day birdwatching, hiking or just relaxing and soul searching in the peace and quiet of the mountain slopes.

The camp is rented out as a whole and rates quoted are based on occupation of four or more guests.
