Our holiday home (three star grading) is situated on the eastern dune in Wilderness, an exclusive area that is renowned for its privacy and virgin beach with unique cliff formations - unspoilt by human development. It is close to the sea (100 m): one can hear the caressing sound of waves and walk to a secluded beach in five minutes. As we are located on the southern slope of the largest dune at the point where the beach road (8th Avenue) is the furthest away from the highway, we are fortunate to have no traffic noise. La Retraite Wilderness is the ideal destination for people in pursuit of peace, privacy and harmony with nature. The serenity and magnificant sea- and mountain views may help to bring poetic insights and to restore creativity: a "retraite" in the true sense of the word. The variety of restaurants and the calm lazy air about Wilderness makes it the perfect place to relax and recharge your batteries. The double story house (225m²) is ideal for two families of four (8 people) or one large family or group of friends. It has four bedrooms and three bathrooms. All bedrooms are fitted with panel heaters, ceiling fans and glass sliding doors which give access to the outdoor entertainment area under large milkwood trees. The top floor is an open plan kitchen/dining room/lounge. It has direct access to wooden decks. The larger northern deck offers an excellent view of the Outeniqua mountains. From the southern deck a superb view of the ocean and the bay can be enjoyed, especially during the summer months when the sun sets over the sea. The kitchen is well equipped with beautiful cabinets (Burmese Teak and Cape Yellowwood) and quality integrated German appliances made by Bauknecht, Bosch, and Siemens. Careful optimisation at the technical level has made the operation of the refrigerators, freezer and dishwasher almost inaudible. a Large hot tray and microwave are also available. Meals are served at a large, circular dining table with ten 'Volkwyn' chairs made by one of the finest cabinet makers in the Western Cape. Satellite TV (DSTV), a DVD player and high fidelity sound are available in the lounge. The house features excellent security: a double lock up garage, electronic alarm, armed response, and a safe to store valuable items. Our laundry has an automatic washing machine (Speed Queen) and a tumble dryer (Speed Queen). A large garden (1500m²), a barbecue/braai under shady milkwood trees, four covered terraces, three wooden decks, satellite TV, a DVD player with high fidelity sound and a spacious tiled double garage / play room (8m x 6m) constitute a venue for entertainment in all weather conditions. The warm waters of the Indian Ocean, the sandy beaches and the lakes provide many opportunities for water sports - a haven of fun for kids and adults! Two paddle skis and two mountain bikes (Cannondale) are available by prior arrangement. We are committed to consistent delivery of very good quality (three star grading) in the overall standard of furnishings and service. We participate in the National Star Grading Scheme of The Tourism Grading Council of South Africa. Our mission is to provide accommodation for people in pursuit of peace, privacy and harmony with nature. Therefore the whole house is rented as a unit. It can be divided into two units to accommodate one smaller group. The other unit would then be closed. Please note that the path to the beach is not suitable for the elderly and young children as it is quite steep. The local residents prefer to keep it that way in order to protect the sea life in the rock pools. The virgin beach is regarded by many international tourists as one of the most beautiful in the world - the only part of Wilderness bay that is unspoilt by human architecture.

Oakhurst is one of the original large properties of the Garden Route. Situated in the Wilderness district, near George. It lies on the undulating plateau between the indigenous forests of the Outeniqua Mountains and the steep forest gorges sloping down to the Wilderness "lake district". The farm covers the area of 640 hectares, 200 hectares of which is forest and fynbos. Five years ago, Jake and Claire decided to restore the Old House on Oakhurst in which they live today. The Old house had lain derelict for decades. Today it had been preserved to its original state. Here they live with their two daughters. In the bottom of the garden is the beautiful stone building in the 1800's, it was very dated, dilapidated and tired. Two years ago, Jake decided to restore the Forge and turn it into a very unique, comfortable and beautiful farm cottage. Built out of rock and huge yellowwood beams, the cottage sleeps two adults and maximum of three children comfortably. It enjoys a quiet setting overlooking the most beautiful forests and fields grazed by herds of jersey dairy cows and Aberdeen Angus beef cattle.

Wilderness South Africa

Wilderness Self-catering Accommodation

Wilderness, in the heart of the Garden Route, is a lovely little town in the most fabulous setting. With forested hills at its back, the town jigsaws itself around a number of pretty wetlands and flows over the high coastal dunes to overlook a magnificent, long, snow white beach where dolphins and whales come to play. Just to the west of the town, the pitch-black, mysterious, forest-clad Kaaimans River wends its way to the sea flowing under a series of bridges that support the N2 and a narrow gauge railway line that carries the historical Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe steam train that runs between George and Knysna.

Although there are lots of lovely places where you can just kick back, have a drink or a meal gazing at a fabulous view, or just read a book under a tree, Wilderness is primarily an active destination. With some fabulous paragliding launch sites, it’s a great place to learn to fly or just to do a tandem flight.

The Wilderness National Park conserves an extensive wetland that winds between lovely flood-plains and indigenous forest. You can rent canoes to explore the meandering waterways or just go for a lovely walk.

Keen birders will appreciate the laid out day trails to and between some very well placed bird hides. You could abseil down a waterfall, do a scenic kloofing (canyoning) trip or join a mountain biking expedition, and the surfing is great.

On Saturday mornings, the nearby Wild Oats Farmers Market is a feast of fabulous food and other delights. Wilderness is on the N2 and close to the airport at George.
