Many, many years ago the seeds of Klein Windhoek were planted by German restaurateur, wine maker and pioneer tobacco farmer John Ludwig. He played a considerable role in cultural, business and public life and is often considered to be the founder of Klein Windhoek. He died in Windhoek on 27th February 1913. On the 1st March he became the first person to be buried in the then Klein Windhoek cemetery. His wife Lida, who died in December 1954, is buried beside him. Suburb of Peacefulness

The early settlements of Windhoek came about because of the water from the hot springs. In the mid-1800's Captain Jan Jonker Afrikaner and his followers established a settlement near one of the main hot springs, located in the present-day Klein-Windhoek, an upper-class suburb of Windhoek.
