If money makes the world go round, Gauteng is one of its major axes. Meaning 'the place where the gold is' Gauteng is the economic powerhouse of Africa. It is South Africa's smallest, wealthiest and most frenetic province. Everything moves fast - cars zoom down the highways, people walk fast through the malls and offices, and new buildings spring up on the drab brown Highveld like so many glass and chrome mushrooms. The whole place buzzes with the energy of making money and spending money. Johannesburg and Gauteng are virtually synonymous but there's more to this province than the hectic Jozi. Pretoria is a laid back city with some lovely old buildings and a wealth of cultural attractions. The restored mining village of Cullinan is worth a visit for its lovely old buildings as well a mine tour and the opportunity to buy diamonds on site.

There are a number of small nature reserves where you could go for walk, or even a horse ride, and see some game. You could go hot air ballooning, paragliding or skydiving. Or take a flip in a vintage plane. A tour of the Cradle of Humankind, which is a world heritage site, offers a new way of looking at human history and prehistory.

Being such a small province, Gauteng is virtually a hub, with easy access to attractions in neighbouring provinces, most notably the Free State and North West Province.

Roodepoort Roodepoort

Close to nature
For Gauteng, where one navigates by shopping malls, Roodepoort is very green, in close proximity to the wonderful Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens, the Rhino and Lion Park, and Kloof en Dal nature reserve.

Irene Irene
Suburb of Centurion

Over-rated and not as cosy & posh
In my humble opinion Irene security village is over-rated and not as cosy & posh as people say it is. Irene security village is like any other neighbourhood in Gauteng, just the stone walls look better. You still have to drive to get to a restaurant as Irene security village does not have any inside the boomed off area nor is there a park inside the Irene security village.

Fourways Fourways
Suburb of Johannesburg

Central with traffic
Fourways is a central area in an expensive part of Gauteng. The Fourways Mall is okay, not the best mall in Johannesburg. This area is near the freeway, which makes travelling practical. The traffic is a nightmare and the interesting cultural places in Gauteng are not located in this area. Monte Casino is wonderful for the theatre, tenpin bowling and the movies, along with the Hive to keep teenagers entertained. Areas surrounding Fourways are worth visiting i.e. Broadacres shopping complex for Readers Warehouse, restaurants and a fabulous Spar.

Walkerville Walkerville
Town of Southern Gauteng

Walkerville, best kept secret in Gauteng!
Walkerville is located just South of Johannesburg, a hidden gem and a definite jewel in the crown of Gauteng! I consider it as one of the South's best kept secrets! Located in Walkerville and its surrounds, are some very nice accommodation establishments. With the petrol price hike and time constraints, why not consider this area when you next want to break away for a weekend? By visiting closer to home, you can stretch out your weekend and save yourself a few hours worth of travelling! The weekly Walkerville Farmers Market and Greens Farmers market, are both good visits and one can visit...

Bronkhorstspruit Bronkhorstspruit
Town of Gauteng

A Cultural Melting Pot
Situated just 50 km East of Pretoria on beautiful Highveld grasslands lies the small farming town of Bronkhorstspruit. One can reach the town on the N4 highway towards Witbank and Middleburg. It owes its existence to the deliciously diverse melting pot of history and culture. Expect to see farmers, locals, and travelling businessmen who utilise its avenues repairing implements, filling maize silos, practising praise and worship and sending their children to some of the 100 year old schools in the town. Its simplistic appearance is far from the culturally diverse and vibrant inhabitants that...
