Bulawayo - friendly city
Bulawayo is a relatively quiet city that is incredible friendly. we moved about with ease and loved the national Gallery and natural History Museum. Feels quiet and safe here - shame more tourists don't come. really recommend Bulawayo as an interesting destination - some nice restaurants and loads of parks within 1 - 4 hr drives.
Bulawayo - Zimbabwe
I had low expectations of Bulawayo and went there because I wanted to see the Matopos National Park. However, Bulawayo was a lot nicer than I had thought and I enjoyed spending time there. As with the rest of Zimbabwe, there is a strong element of faded glory and everything is 'a bit broken', but the people are as friendly as they always have been and there is no feeling of insecurity or menace. I would recommend including Bulawayo on an itinerary of Zimbabwe, if only as an extra to visiting the Matopos National Park.
Lovely laid back city
Much more expensive than it used to be for an overseas visitor (e.g. pricey admission fees to the art gallery) as is the whole country. Bulawayo is still a relaxed, safe and enjoyable city to wander around in and use as a base for day trips or as a stopping off point. The infrastructure is in poor condition though and has deteriorated a lot and power cuts are an issue. The Natural History Museum is worth a visit - a world class geology collection - but the lovely 1970s building is in desparate need of repair - the rain was coming in through the roof.
Charming old lady.
Bulawayo is looking shabbier than it used to, but the streets are still wide, the iconic buildings and landmarks are still there and mostly in pretty good shape, and the the recommended hotels and restaurants are perfectly acceptable.I visited my old school, Townsend, which is looking fantastic and well maintained from the outside. The sky is as big and blue as it ever was - somehow the clouds always look whiter in Zim.Well worth a visit, and of course the beautiful Matobo's are nearby!
Historic and friendly
Bulawayo is the greatest city in Zimbabwe with beautiful gardens, good shopping and comfortable accommodation. The World Heritage listed Matobo Hills and Khami ruins and Chipingali Wildlife Sanctuary are but a few of the great, easily accessible attractions on its doorstep.
