Nature Reserves

Maputo (43.8 km from Inhaca Island) Formerly known as the Maputo Elephant Reserve, the Maputo Special Reserve is a perfect day trip for people staying in the Maputo area. Recently the reserve joined parks in Swaziland and South Africa and now forms part of the Lubombo Transfrontier Conservation Area.
The scenic diversity of marine and inshore habitats offers amazing opportunities for watching wildlife, as well as sport fishing, diving, and canoeing. Elephants, hippos, crocodiles, monkeys, and a large variety of bird species are frequently spotted.
Hiking Trail
in
Bilene (83.6 km from Inhaca Island) Walk from the lagoon mouth to the viewpoint on top of Turtle Cliff. The climb starts 1.5 km from the beach. Enjoy magnificent 360-degree views of Bilene Lagoon and the coastline. It’s a great place to watch whales on their migration up the Mozambique's coastline between May and August.

Bilene (86.5 km from Inhaca Island) Bilene Beach offers an extensive stretch of white sandy beach. Tucked behind the beach is the wonderful 27 km long San Martin estuary, also known as Lagoa Uembje.
Bilene is the closest beach resort in Mozambique to Johannesburg, and attracts numerous South African visitors during the holiday season. Although Bilene is an ideal Mozambique holiday destination on its own, it also serves as a good stop over point for travellers en route to Xai Xai, Inhambane and the Bazaruto Archipelago.

Try your hand at kayaking, windsurfing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, parasailing and tubing or just have a blast. The lagoon is huge, with ample space to throttle up and really have fun. It's best to bring your own equipment, but some items can be hired at resorts. Boat transfers to the beach.

Four By Four Trails

Ponta do Ouro (93.3 km from Inhaca Island) The area around Ponta do Ouro is a 4 x 4 paradise with soft sand roads winding through the dense and unspoiled dune forest, inland flood plains and numerous lakes/marshlands.
In summer the rain can sometimes turn the roads into large, muddy pools, and in winter the sand roads dry out leaving a fine-grain surface; both of which resulting in conditions that can be more challenging than they appear. You may find your driving skills tested to the limit.
As in South Africa, 4 x 4 vehicles are not allowed on the beach unless you have a permit.
