That Beach!!!
Chris Barker - Friday, 28 December 2018
CB is very basic, but exactly as per the pics. We stayed in a 2 bed reed hut, and reviews here scared us. It was exactly as per the pics, had a decent floor fan, good mossie net, ok bed, and working bathroom. We're used to 4-5*, and we coped remarkably well. The restaurant is a pleasure. Good food & drinks, ok selection, lower than SA prices :) Service is sloooow and inept, but that's tolerable. The view is outstanding. Now the beach! Oh wow, we did NOT expect such paradise. The bay itself is wavy but calm enough to play in. Peak season and truly empty by SA standards. 500m round the corner is a wild beach with tons of privacy, and great photo op locations. The market is NOT worth your time or risk. Nothing to buy, the guys selling are truly sharks in every way (pickpockets, overpriced, garbage). If buying cashew nuts; know your SA prices, sample the actual packet you buy (they switch), and ideally, roast them again at home cos many people think that's what makes them sick in Tofo. When you get home, they WILL be 25% less weight than you were sold. On being sick in Tofo...we NEVER get sick when travelling to India, Thailand, China...but we got sick in Tofo :( We blame the ice, of which we drank volumes (it melts so darned fast). But nothing terminal :) What to do for evenings: Tofo parties tuesday, friday, sunday. Every other night is dead dead dead! For parties you want Mozambeat hotel (1km but Mt300 taxi from CB), Verandas (400m down the road from CB gate, use google maps with satellite view), tofo tofo was dead for us, and we didn't get to try Fatimas and Dinos. Safety; we felt fine walking late at night as a couple. As a single lady you really shouldn't.
Two nights in Tofo

My husband and I went to Tofo for a few days at the end of our honeymoon and loved it. We stayed in a casita at Casa Barry. It wasn't the fanciest of places but it had everything we needed - a bed with a mosquito net!, a bathroom with a shower and toilet, a fan, and a table and chairs on the porch so we could relax outside if we wanted a break from the beach (which we didn't). We didn't have a view of the ocean from our door but the ocean was literally a few minutes away so it was super easy to hang out at the beach whenever we wanted to be near the ocean.

We also ate and drank at Casa Barry's restaurant and were served amazing appetizers and meals. Our favorite appetizers were the coconut prawns and our favorite meal was probably the matapa but everything we had was great. If you want to mix it up, there are other lodges nearby that also serve good drinks and food. Casa Barry was also somewhat close to our dive shop so that was great; we even got a discount on one of our dives.

Overall, we really liked Casa Barry and would definitely recommend it to friends and would stay there again!

A lovely gem

It was lovely, very clean etc. The house boy was a gem. The one thing that place needs is a nice pool near the resturant. The food was very slow but Clive was very nice and kept updating us. On the whole it was lovely.
Good location

Casa Barry makes the most tasty English breakfast with pork sausage. 10/10 for their great Breakfast!

Casa Barry
Casa Barry is a beautiful, scenic lodge situated in Tofo, Mozambique, where our focus is to provide guests with a memorable experience. Relax and enjoy sun-filled days soaking up the warmth that Mozambique has to offer. Take our perfect beaches, our food and culture, and you have one of the best tourist destinations in the world.

The lodge is situated on the southern tip of Tofo point and covers an area of 13 acres which has been developed with the family tourist in mind. Situated right on the beach, access is by foot and no vehicles are required, should you wish to go and have a quiet swim in the clear warm water in the bay. The lodge's property borders onto the high-water mark and allows guests a wonderful view of the whole bay, especially from the restaurant and bar which overlooks the entire Tofo bay.

The lodge has been built with local materials and all accommodation is provided in reed and thatch units. Many of our guests return year after year and make Casa Barry their number one choice of holiday destination. We offer a selection of self-catering as well as non-self-catering accommodation.

Tofo beach is situated in the province of Inhambane, 22 km from the City of Inhambane. Inhambane City is steeped in history as it was a favourite place for ancient sailors and slave traders to stop and replenish their resources. The natural estuary allowed vessels to enter a naturally calm area where there was always fresh water and supplies. Vasco De Gama, the famous Portuguese adventurer, made Inhambane one of his favourite stop-off points as he and his men were able to moor their ships in the calm bay and replenish before continuing to and from the East.

The name Inhambane means "the place of the friendly people" and still today this legend lives on, with the local population being extremely friendly and happy. The local population tap the juice of the coconut trees during the season when the trees are flowering and with this sap, they make a favourite alcoholic drink called Sura. At certain times of the year, there are lots of celebrations and visitors are able to taste the powerful local brew at their own peril.

Casa Barry Lodge has been linked to Tofo Scuba for the past 10 years. All diving is now done with Liquid Adventures, who are situated about 600 meters up the beach from Casa Barry Lodge. They will also handle all your dive requirements including all transport between the lodge and the dive centre. Tofo Scuba also offers full equipment rental and all dive courses from their dive centre in Tofo.

The seas around Tofo are well-known for the spectacular fishing that is available all year round. The first 1000 lb marlin caught off the African coast was caught at Tofo and because of the very steep drop off caused by the Mozambique current coming very close to the land, this produces a huge array of different game fish, as well as an abundance of billfish very close to the shore. The lodge offers fishing charters on their two fully equipped ski-boats, either with or without tackle and with a qualified assistant who will assist in helping you to achieve that dream of landing the "Big One".

The rock and surf fishing in and around Tofo is spectacular, with wonderful ledges, sandy beaches and the famous cliffs of Tofinho, there is definitely a spot for everyone to fish from, whether it be drop shot style fishing or hunting for the big Giant King Fish. The largest bonefish caught in Tofo this season was 9,86 kg.

Casa Barry Lodge features a full restaurant and bar facility on-site. Our restaurant and deck are located on the water's edge and overlook the famous Tofo Bay swimming beach. The restaurant offers simple meals, from hamburgers and pasta to the more extravagant and famous seafood platters. We try and offer as many fresh seafood dishes as possible, however, this does sometimes depend on what our fishermen manage to catch on the day. Mozambique's famous dishes, such as peri-peri chicken, prawns and many other local dishes, are also on offer in the restaurant, being specialities of our local chefs. A lodge bar is a place where one can relax and listen to stories of unbelievable diving and fishing adventures, or watch satellite TV to catch up on what the rest of the world is doing while you are in paradise. The bar is well-stocked with international, local and South African beverages and is open from 7.30 am until 11 pm.

Casa Barry Lodge is also a proud sponsor of the Manta Ray and Whale Shark Trust and will continue to support this wonderful cause. The Manta Ray and Whale Shark Research Centre is based at Casa Barry Lodge from where they conduct and facilitate their research, conservation and education on the marine life of Mozambique. Current research focuses on sharks and rays, primarily manta rays and whale sharks. Tofo is one of the best places on earth to dive with giant manta rays and swim with gentle whale sharks. You can see giant manta rays and whale sharks 12 months of the year at Tofo. We believe that Tofo is the only place in the world, that has both species present all year round. Humpback whales also visit us every year between July and the end of September.
