If ever Im in need of some RnR, I will surely return to Kwela Lodge. From the friendly staff to the absolutely breathtaking views of Albert Falls and Dam, I felt like I could have happily stayed there for a week or so. Quiet, peace, beauty, nature, what more could one ask for? Thanks for the hospitality and for accommodating my learners.

We had a pleasant stay at Kwela Lodge, it was quite enjoyable. The Lodges closeness to the Midmar Dam was a plus, as we were swimming in the race, so it was very convenient. The rooms were comfortable and were fully equipped with all the necessities that you’d expect. It was set in the beautiful surrounds of nature, with beautiful views. Thank you for a lovely time.

Warm & inviting
Mrs Basson - Sunday, 19 October 2014
What a lovely, lovely stay! Such a warm, friendly welcome when we arrived-as if we were old friends. The house is beautiful, neat, clean and tidy and full of heritage. Our hosts made us feel at home, from the moment we walked in until we departed. They were very accommodating concerning our toddlers needs. We were served a lovely breakfast the following morning and they even kindly helped us as we had problems with our vehicle. We will definitely stay over again and recommend that others do too!
Lovely Guest House, Sunning Location and Very Welcoming Hosts
Webber - Monday, 13 October 2014
We, a group of 4 friends, stayed at Kwela Lodge for a night before the Amashova cycle race. We were warmly welcomed into the guest house. The hosts are a lovely couple who are incredibly friendly and did their best to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Unfortunately we did not get to stay long enough to take full advantage of the location but the view from the guesthouse is breathtaking! When staying in Pietermaritzberg again, we will definitely try and stay at Kwela Lodge again, and hopefully for more than 1 night.
Relaxing

Matthias Ziegler, Germany - Thursday, 20 December 2012
Kwela at Ottos Bluff
Mr RW Pillay - Thursday, 31 May 2012
The experience that we had a Kwela Lodge was \home away from home\". The owners were very accommodating and ensured that we were well taken care of. There was some interesting facts on the area like the movie \"King Solomons mines\" was filmed in that area Ottos Bluff. The view of the Albert falls dam was quite spectacular.I would recommend Kwela Lodge to anyone who wants to have some time to themselves without the hustle and bustle of the city."
Very pleasant stay
Mrs Gottsche - Thursday, 03 May 2012

Most enjoyable!
Kwela Lodge - True value for money
Mrs Hadlow - Saturday, 14 April 2012
Kwela Lodge provides more than a bed to sleep in and breakfast in the morning. A loving, caring environment where children are made to feel welcome. The small additional items like bubble bath, hand-cream, cotton balls, etc, in the bathroom would rival any 5 star hotel. I will definitely stay again and recommend it to all.
Nice quiet getaway
Graeme Scholtz, South Africa - Monday, 13 February 2012
Very friendly, amazing views and good service. Recommended.
Thanks
Zwelihle sokhela, South Africa - Monday, 05 December 2011

Mr Elengical - Friday, 12 August 2011
I found Kwela Lodge to be a great stay. The Lodge is situated well away from the city and its great views make it a wonderful place to stay if you want to get away from the pressures of city life.

The owners are very welcoming and care about each visitors experience there.

I recommend this place to all visitors to Pietermaritzburg!
Amazing
Elsie van der Merwe, South Africa - Tuesday, 03 May 2011
Our stay at Kwela Lodge was an amazing experience! Birgit is truly a very special person and I must say that I will gladly recommend Kwela Lodge as a place to stay. Our breakfast was great and even the way my nine-year-old granddaughter was treated was special. It was my daughter's birthday and the breakfast was made special with a little treat in her serial bowl! Thanks Birgit and Rene.
Lovely
Vimbai Mhuka, South Africa - Monday, 18 April 2011

Little Farm in Wonderful Landscape
Rainer - Saturday, 30 January 2010
The owners of this Lodge (Farm) are very friendly and hospitable. We had a nice stay there and we´re very sad, that we must go on after one night. Next time we´ll stay longer.

Beautiful views
- Monday, 09 November 2009
Friendly hostess. Beautiful views. The accommodation is basic but clean and tidy. Breakfast was delicious and there were thoughtful touches. The smell in the hallway was disappointing and we didnt think through the farm atmosphere (which was a plus for us on booking) as a 4.30 am wake-up call from a rooster was not exactly what we had in mind. There was unfortunately no milk on the convenient tea and coffee caddy, but other than these, it was value for money. Its convenient in terms of placement and was what we had hoped for in terms of being close to but away from the bustle of the city.
What a lovely place.
Anonymous, South Africa - Monday, 05 October 2009
The people are friendly and offer warm smiles and a cosy place to stay. It is not far from the city and yet was so peaceful. Perfect place to get away and enjoy the beautiful views and quaint surroundings!
Excellent.

Andre Verwey, South Africa - Monday, 13 July 2009
The hosts were generous and hospitable and made our stay the best ever. We actually stayed an extra night! If ever we go to Pietermaritzburg again, Kwela is the only place where we shall stay. Excellent! Kind regards,
Will definitely return
Mr & Mrs Du Plooy - Tuesday, 14 April 2009
Our hosts were very friendly and went out of their way to make our stay as pleasant as possible. The room was cosy and comfortable. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast on the patio overlooking the beautiful surroundings. An added bonus for us was the farm animals - what great fun! We will definitely return and recommend this lodge to anyone looking for some peace and quiet and excellent service.
Fantastic Getaway
Neresh Mahdaw, South Africa - Monday, 16 February 2009
In the short time that we had been there we have taken back homes many happy memories
I ant to move in!!!!
Sma Deku - Monday, 08 December 2008
My goodness we had a great time!!! The Oeggers are sooooooo hospitable, it was like we moved in to our other home, a better home. The Pecan Nut cottage is so nice, and in the morning the donkeys would greet us :-), what's their names again? :-)..... We really enjoyed it, driving out of PMB wasn't nice, we wanted to stay longer. If I visit KZN again, I'm definitely staying at Kwela Lodge!!!!!
Very good
Marisa Zietsman, South Africa - Sunday, 30 March 2008
We enjoyed our stay very much. It was quiet, without any interruptions.
Who let the dogs out?
Mr Jones - Tuesday, 26 February 2008
We arrived after travelling for 36 hours and Birgit rustled up a meal for us without prior request so we would not have to travel back into Pietermaritzburg. We ate with the family which was a delightful start to our holiday and, although we had a 4 oclock start next morning, we sat up talking with them later than we had planned. The dogs were disturbed which kept us awake for some hours but Birgit packed a substantial breakfast for us for our trip to Zululand and we spent another pleasant evening with them on our return. The room was spacious and comfortable and our welcome sincere and friendly. We hope to meet them all again. The views from the terrace over the Albert Falls dam are stunning and we wish we could have stayed longer. Perhaps another time?
Very good
Renier Feldtmann, South Africa - Thursday, 14 February 2008
Pecan Nut Cottage was good value for money. Rained all night with the sound of raindrops on the tin roof. Roadworks on the way there made it a bit of a rough ride to get there. Had a lovely breakfast the following morning before departure. Hope to have a longer visit sometime in the future.
A Nice Stay

A Great Get-Away
Ms Doelab - Monday, 09 July 2007
As a post graduate student, it was an absolutely amazing get-away from the hustle and bustle of campus and city life. Kwela lodge was a relaxing and tranquil lodge, with a great view of the Albert Falls dam. It was conveniently located close to a small shopping center in Pietermaritzburg, and close to the liberty midlands mall.
I would recommend this lodge to all those out there who wish to get-away and \do-nothing\". Kwela lodge was a lovely place to put your feet up and relax your mind. The owners were also very friendly and made our stay as comfy as they possibly could. Thank you. "
Most awesome and relaxing stay

lynne CAREY, United Kingdom - Sunday, 22 April 2007
Superb location, most welcoming hosts, well equipped and comfortable cottage with beautiful grounds and astounding views, which adequately served our needs. Honoured to be staying in a cottage with so much history. Self catering so the food was great! A lovely establishment with a variety of accommodation and delightful hosts.
Friendly welcome
Mrs Beumer - Monday, 16 April 2007
Although we only stayed for one night, but we thoroughly enjoyed or stay. Our hosts were very friendly and made us feel welcome and at home from the moment we arrived until we left. Add the beautiful surroundings and the magnificent view on the Albert Falls Dam and we could not find better. We will certainly visit again!

Kwela Lodge
Mr Hall - Tuesday, 27 February 2007
A very welcoming reception and a building of great character with a host of period details. There are wonderful views and very good facilities including the pool and bar. Our hosts could not have done more to make our short stay more enjoyable. Our only regret is that we did not stay for a longer period.
Great Location
Anne , South Africa - Thursday, 15 February 2007
My son and daughter in law stayed at Kwela Lodge and thoroughly enjoyed their stay in a beautiful environment overlooking the valley. Hopefully we shall be able to come there ourselves in the near future and also enjoy the tranquility and quiet away from mad "Joeys".
Lekker gebly
amanda keet, South Africa - Monday, 12 February 2007
Dankie, het lekker gebly. Hulle het baie moeite gedoen met die seuns se verblyf, word baie waardeer. Moontlike waaiers vir kamers? Etes was lekker, baie dankie.

The accommodation and hospitality of the owners was first class and we enjoyed our weekend even with the continuous rain.
One night stay
Althea Scott, Pinetown - Friday, 12 January 2007
Accommodation was adequate and clean in the Pecan Nut Cottage, which was very private away from the main residence. My husband just loved the farm animals and it was all so interesting. Breakfast was exceptional, with lovely place setting and a fantastic view of the dam in the distance. Surrounding gardens were lovely and the owners were helpful and friendly.
Enjoyable stay
Lynn Schumann, South Africa - Monday, 14 August 2006
We enjoyed our stay and our breakfast. The cottage was comfortable and reasonable. The owner has thought of a lot of little things that make a difference. A little more lighting would have been good as we arrived after dark and struggled a little to find our way around.
A wonderfull stay!
Roz Neale, South Africa - Monday, 19 June 2006
We found that our stay at Kwela Lodge was extremely enjoyable and we'd definitely return. Our hosts, especially Birgit, really impressed us because they were so accommodating and friendly!!
Slow paced weekend
Sylvie Phelps, South Africa - Monday, 10 April 2006
Driving in to the property one can see the property is vast and calm. The little oak cottage is very old world charme and cosy. Beautfiul views of the Albert Falls Dam on the horizon.

Kwela Lodge
Kwela Lodge is the ideal getaway for the holiday maker or business traveller, nature lover and bird watcher - anyone wanting to relax and seeking tranquillity, peace and security in country surroundings for a weekend or longer stay. The original farmhouse was built in 1841 and belonged to Par Otto, one of the first settlers to the valley.

Otto’s Bluff Mountain is named after him. In the fifties Otto's Bluff Farm - as Kwela Lodge was then called was a working farm with dairy cattle, maize and wattle tree plantations and a mill. In 1936/7 the movie King Solomon’s Mines based on Rider Haggard’s book was shot on location at the foot of Otto’s Bluff Mountain.

Enjoy our beautiful gardens and trees which are home to an abundance of birds and make friends with our farm animals. Explore the unspoilt African bush on our property or simply relax at the pool and listen to the rustle of the palm leaves above you. Be inspired by the history of this magic place.

The lodge is situated in country surroundings at the foot of Otto's Bluff Mountain with a stunning panoramic view over the Albert Falls Dam and Umgeni Valley - only 15 minutes from Pietermaritzburg, 20 minutes from Albert Falls Dam Reserve and 50 minutes from Durban.
