Description

A four-bedroom guest house with countryside charm and atmosphere. Perfect accommodation for up to 10 people. Sutherland is nestled in the Roggeveld Mountains. They say we are the coldest town in South Africa, but at Sutherland Guest House we will warm-heartedly welcome you.

This is a typical Karoo-style house built with stone and sporting a big verandah and thick walls. The house is suitable for two to 10 people and may be hired to a group of people who would like to do self-catering. We can also spoil you with a lovely farm-style breakfast. The rooms have their own bathrooms and the beds have electric blankets for those chilly winter nights. Each room has coffee and tea facilities. In the big lounge and dining room you can relax in front of a warm fire and forget about all your troubles.

Sutherland is known for the Southern Africa Large Telescope at the observatory, a mere 15 km from town. You can do a day or night tour at the observatory, but bookings are essential. The museum, the birthplace of the Afrikaans writers and poets, NP van Wyk Louw and his brother, EG Louw is also worth a visit. The Dutch Reform Church, with its beautiful organ and history of the Anglo Boer War is a must see. Our fauna and flora, the place of the riverine rabbit, rare butterflies, sutherlandia and many more flowers in spring will amaze you.

Stayed only one night but all was in order, comfortable rooms, lovely breakfast, thank you.

09 December 2014

Fantastic place, clean and excellent food. Staff members and owner very friendly, nice little town. The place was value for money for sure.

10 October 2014

Absolutely superb! We had everything we needed, and although the owner was ill in hospital at the time, she organised her good friend to greet us and hand over the keys, typical Karoo hospitality!
Just note that the petrol station is only open on a Sunday from 11am after the owner has been to Church. The next nearest petrol station is Laingsburg or Touws Rivier. (Matjiesfontein one closed 7 years ago when water got into the tanks).

05 January 2014

We are a family of seven and really enjoyed our stay at Sutherland quest house on the 2nd of January 2014. The owner was very friendly and the house was very clean and the bedding very comfortable. We only went to Sutherland to do the star gazing and enjoyed every moment. The breakfast the next morning was just what we needed before we left for home. Thank you Ester. We will definitely recommend Sutherland Guest House.

26 December 2013

Smaller than I expected but suited our needs as a base to visit SALT. We received a friendly welcome and breakfast was nice.

We are very proud to present the Louw-Museum in Sutherland, home of both NP van Wyk Louw and WEG Louw. NP van Wyk Louw, born on 11 June 1906 in Sutherland, was an Afrikaans-language poet, playwright, and scholar. He is the older brother of...
