Golden Gate Highlands National Park

Golden Gate is a very nice getaway destination suitable for everyone and special occasions.

As the name says, Golden Gate is a resort rich with all kinds of accomodation one could imagine to get. It caters for people with different kinds of needs, mentioning family outing, groups, individuals, camping, conference, hiking, etc. Its location, based out of town, helps people who needs to refresh their minds. Its quiet and nature plays it big. During the night, its cool and quiet. You get inspired by the sound made by wild animals and the soft howling of the wind and the freshness of the wind. While, during the day its lovely and one can enjoy a walk through the park. That place has this healing impact for people with stresses and fatique. People who work there are always humble and willing to assist. I really love the place. I have been there several times, alone and with family.....I respect the person who came up with the idea of the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, It was a great idea.

Golden Gate is an amazing Reserve. We were fortunate to send a week there during the last week of Jul 11. We had enjoyed the beautiful walking trails so high-up in the mountains and the most scenery site on the 4 X 4 trail was just amazing. Although it was mid-winter and very thing was brown and dry it is amazing how the mountains chanced as the sun moves. All the colours and the “faces” in the mountain are something out of this world. Bird life was abounded all around the camping area. Unfortunate we had not seen the Bearded Vultures but the 100st Cape Vultures made up for them. The biggest surprise was on Tuesday morning when snow had transformed the whole area into a fairy-tale landscape of white and here and there brown grasses patch. It was peculiar to see how adults turn into kids again in the snow and all the snowmen how crept out from all over where they were. All the antelope Eland, Zebra, Hartebeest and Duikers was just amazing. We pity them for finding something to graze under this white blanket. We are going back to Golden Gate in Feb 13.

We had an amazing weekend at Highlands Golden gate park. Beautiful location, good service, am dying to return.

Outdoorsy families will revel in the endless hiking, swimming, climbing, horse riding, and vulture viewing options. Gorgeous glowing mountain cliffs and sweeping grasslands with herds of antelope and zebra offer numerous photographic opportunities – the ultimate prize is a bearded vulture swooping down to the vulture restaurant. There’s also a colourful cultural village and really old paintings hidden in caves. Don’t miss walking to the cavernous Cathedral Cave with its wispy waterfall – it’s just a 45-minute doddle. The overnight Rhebok Trail is an awesome hike.

Really fantastic view points from which to photograph the amazing geology and landscapes in the area. Not much in the way of game, but definitely worth a visit. Just make sure you don't go in winter, because then it is absolutely freezing.
