Poortje is the ideal short holiday destination for weekends and mid-week breaks. Poortje Game Farm comprises of three beautiful stone cottages situated in the secluded Free State farm grasslands, hidden away by small hills and accessed only via a small windy gravel road.

The cottages are surrounded by ancient rock walls and kraals shaped by a vibrant history. Several species of game traverse the farm and gather in the idyllic valley leading into the Vaal River. Because of the intimate setting of the three cottages, we accommodate groups of friends or family for special events. However, due to its secluded location Poortje is not the most ideal stop and go accommodation especially when arriving at night and it is therefore suggested that guests stay more than a single night.

We offer visitors an opportunity to experience the tranquillity of the Free State with an array of wildlife on the farm, or just the simple freedom of being in a farm environment with cattle, sheep and fresh air for the whole family. It is a perfect breakaway opportunity from the busy city life to peaceful farm cottages where stars fill the night sky and fresh air clears the mind. It is where life's pace slows down to a tranquil walk among the game in the area. Come and experience outdoor activities like game watching, bird ringing and hiking trails.

We a had a very nice stay, the accomodation set up is comfortable and every thing you may need is provided for, a great place for a group of friends with children to have a weekend away as you get the whole place to yourself and the kids have a ball, very friendly Freestate hospitality from Gerhard and Hannelie, we will definitely be back.

The room is very basic. The sleeping room and bathroom (shower) are far away from each other. It's too big for only one couple It's very far from the village, you don't feel very safe. The environment (game park) is really nice. It's the perfect place for people who love adventure, not for people who like a little bit of comfort. The owners are really nice and helpful.

Despite icy Free State weather, we were snug in our stone bungalows out in the cornfields, and the shower water was hot. Beds and pillows more comfortable than we've experienced at twice the price. I'd describe the living conditions as "basic comfort" if I could only use 2 words. We enjoyed having game roaming so close to the bungalows-springbok just 5m away when we woke up in the morning. Nice big lapa and braai area and communal kitchen generously equipped with everything you'd need for a longer stay than our overnight stop. En-suite loo and handbasin, with a few metres to walk to the showers. Lights are solar powered. Hosts very pleasant and helpful. Excellent value for money and a bit of an adventure for townies as it feels more remote than it is. Our children wanted to stay longer, explore the farm and do the game drive too, but we were out of time.

Unforntunately we only had planed on one night and arrived late which forced Gerhard to take us there in order to not get lost, but nevertheless we had a fabulous evening at the game farm and met the two almost tame bucks in the early morning. An establishment I will always recommend. Thanks to the hosts who are so adorable.
