Little Carthage

Description

We offer two chalets overlooking the Olifants River, plus a pool and pool deck for guest use. We are set within a 1000 ha game reserve with giraffe, zebra, kudu, nyala, warthog, eland, water buck, and more. There are crocodiles and hippos in the main stream. The adventurous can explore the island, potholes and waterfalls right in front of Little Carthage.

The Loft Chalet sleeps four, with a queen-size bed downstairs and a loft bedroom with twin beds. The loft is not suitable for children under five years old unless they are monkeys, or women over 40 years unless agile. There is a kitchenette with a small fridge, a kettle, and basic cutlery and crockery. There is a bathroom with a shower.

The Rondavel sleeps two and is a very basic but neat open-plan room, with a queen-size bed and a bathroom with a shower. Cooking and catering needs to be done at the communal kitchen. It is suitable for a short stopover, or for family or friends hiring both chalets together.

There is a large pool deck overlooking the river with a swimming pool, a braai area and an eight-seater table under shade. The open kitchen has a 12-seater table under thatch, a fridge-freezer, a gas oven and stove, a microwave and cutlery and crockery.

It's a great getaway for people who love the bush, but please be prepared for the bush. There are geckos, lizards, spiders and the occasional snake, monkeys and baboons, and a little field mouse that is occasionally seen in the Loft Cottage. We try not to kill anything except mosquitoes and flies, and so on.

Please try and arrive while it is still light, as you have 11 km of dirt road and then 3.5 km of bush road to negotiate. You don't need a 4x4 but leave the Porche at home - my mom's little Chevy Spark copes fine. Power failures are rare but may happen and are beyond my control. We have a number of alternatives for lighting and cooking in the event of a power failure.
