Called Aukoerebis(place of great noise) by the Khoi San people, the powerful flow of water gushing out from the vast granite abyss of the Orange River Gorge. Besides the falls, great sites to visit are Moon Rock, Ararat and Echo Corner. Home to a diversity of species, the Augrabies National Park and its spectacular granite gorge offers great birding, some small game, reptiles, springbok, gemsbok and giraffe and a fun hiking trail.

Named for the deeply carved pool, Debengi means ‘place of the big pot'. Right in the middle of hiking country, it’s also renowned for some rare species of birds. One of these is the colourful Grey Wagtail, a regular summer visitor to this pool. An endemic bird that will get twitchers excited is the Bush Strike – only found here and in the Woodbush Forest nearby. Other beautiful birds to tick off are the Chorister Robin and green Narina Trogon.

Access to the observation platform is through the old ZAZM tunnel built in the late 1800s for the rail track between the towns Waterval Onder and Waterval Boven (meaning 'above the waterfall'), now named Emgwenya (Zulu for 'place of the crocodile').

If you’re quiet you might even spot shy bush buck in the shadows. The Zulu name for Howick Falls is KwaNogqaza, meaning Place of the Tall One. According to local teachings, the plunge pool at the bottom is the home of the Inkanyamba, a Loch Ness-type creature. The waterfall's name originates from the outcrop of rock on the face of the falls which forms the shape of a "Mother and Child". You can reach the Madonna and Child waterfall by hiking down for a moderately steep 150 m, with the assistance of stairs and handrails at particular spots. There is a longer route via the Main Road past what is known as the 'Big Tree', which is an 800-year-old yellow wood. Both routes will take you through the indigenous Tyumie forest. At the bottom of the waterfall is a pond perfect for cooling off and indulging in the peaceful surroundings. There are also other paths to further explore that stem out into the untamed forest.

Meiringspoort Pass is 25km Long with 25 interestingly named drifts to traverse, each with their own story.
