Located deep in the heart of Zanzibar’s historical Stone Town, the newly opened Jafferji House is an elegant boutique hotel. Recapturing the romance of travel, it beautifully combines modern luxury with the mesmerizing heritage that has shaped Zanzibar’s history.

Taking its name from its owner who once used the building as his family home, Jafferji House and Spa has been lovingly restored and styled to reflect its original splendour. Today, Javed Jafferji, a famous East African photographer and publisher proudly displays his personal photo collection around the hotel, and has carefully chosen select pieces from his treasured personal antique collection to fill the hotel’s rooms. Personal attention to detail is apparent throughout the hotel, and it is Jafferji’s hope that you’ll experience the ‘true’ Zanzibar as he knows it, and fall in love with the romance and history that surrounds Stone Town.

Each of the hotel’s ten unique suites is dedicated to, and inspired by, famous people who have left their mark on Zanzibar’s colourful past. The superior suites boast special outdoor baths offering spectacular views over the rooftops of Stone Town.

After a full day of exploring the narrow streets of Stone Town, unwind with a delicious spice infused coffee or a refreshing homemade juice at the hotel’s intimate Mistress of Spice Café. Or, savour the charm of a traditional Zanzibar afternoon in the hotel’s central courtyard while indulging in some local Sheesha. In the evening, enjoy an intimate dinner with a delectable selection of local and international cuisine; all made from the finest ingredients the island has to offer.

For those looking for a little special pampering, the hotel’s rooftop spa offers many traditional treatments using all natural and authentic Zanzibari ingredients.

They say that when you travel, the magic of your experience starts with your hotel. We invite you to come experience the magic of Jafferji House and Spa.

House of Spices is a typical 18th Century house in Zanzibar and comprises three floors enclosing a central courtyard. The house offers four comfortable bedrooms and the rooms can be rented separately, or the unit as a whole.

On the ground floor the main entrance and reception of the house looks out onto Kiponda Street, one of the major thoroughfares crossing the town. On the second floor of the house there are two terraces which were used for drying the spices before they were packed. One now hosts a restaurant serving a wide selection of dishes, gently scented with spices. The wooden oven is used to cook fragrant pizzas, and vegetarian and fish dishes can also be enjoyed. The second terrace is now a wine bar offering wines from most known wineries around the world, complemented by tapas and snacks. From both shaded terraces with their open sides, rooftop views of the minarets and streets of Stone Town can be enjoyed.

On the first floor there are four bedrooms that are all air-conditioned as well as three bathrooms and two sitting rooms. This was the floor originally occupied by the trader in the last century, together with his wife and their three daughters. Every room has its own little treasures with original Zanzibar-style furnishings, beautifully preserved, in a setting of authentic Swahili architecture. Each room carries the name of a spice.

There is a shop on the ground floor, where you can find many gift items that are perfect for spicing up the lives of friends and loved ones.

The Swahili House is a sparkling hotel with traditional influences and modern day facilities combined with authentic Swahili hospitality. The Swahili House features five floors, all built around a beautiful traditional Zanzibar courtyard and reachable via traditional Zanzibari staircases and an elevator.

Located in the bustling heart of Stone Town, the building was originally set up and used as an Indian Merchant House in the 19th century. In the 125 years that were to come, the building was home to one of the many Sultan families and then became a hotel some years ago.

The 20 rooms are spread out over four floors and can be divided in three different room categories, namely four Sultan Suites, three Deluxe Rooms and 13 Suites. The rooms all are restored and decorated in traditional Swahili style, but adjusted to Western standards which, for example, includes European sized mattresses, air-conditioning and a fan. Most rooms also feature a spectacular open bathroom with a shower and bath.

The Swahili House would definitely not be the same without our rooftop terrace, which houses our bar, restaurant and a very relaxing Jacuzzi overlooking the Indian Ocean. Enjoy a cocktail, lunch or dinner while indulging in stunning views of Stone Town and the Swahili coastal area.

Our á la carte menu is a combination of Eastern and Western influences, spices and flavours, and includes a wide variety of freshly caught fish and seafood, Mediterranean tapas and is changed on a daily basis. A continental and full English breakfast buffet is served from our rooftop kitchen every morning and we also offer a large variety of wines, international spirits and delicious cocktails to enjoy a romantic sunset with.
