    Penhalonga Travel Guide

The Springboard to Zimbabwes Highlands - Penhalonga is an area rich in history - much of it forgotten. It was the site of the first Nurses Station in Zimbabwe, the resolute Nurses walking from Beira; it was the site where Cecil Rhodes first entered Zimbabwe, and was the site of the first gold discoveries. There remains an operational gold mine to this day. However, the value of Penhalonga today lies in its location; it is an ideal springboard to Zimbabwe's Eastern Highlands. Due to a variety of factors, the Highlands of Zimbabwe have long been forgotten, but they remain amonst the most spectacular and beautiful areas of Africa. The Vumba mountains lie to the south of Penhalonga. Mist-cloaked for much of the year, the Vumba is home to the Leopard Rock Golf Course and Nature Reserve. The Golf Course is among the finest on the Continent - certainly the view from the 17th green in unparalleled. The Game Park contains Plains Game - zebra, impala, giraffe, kudu and much more. The lack of predators and large Game means patrons are welcome to walk in the Park, or ride a horse. The Vumba is also home to one of those curious oddities that seem to abound in Africa; a clash of First and Third Worlds - in this instance - Tonys Coffee Shop. With seating for no more than a couple of dozen, Tony provides a most extensive list of Coffees and Teas - while his cakes have been rated better than anything served in the finest Coffee Shops in Vienna! They truly have to be seen to be believed! All this is just an hour and 20 minutes drive from Penhalonga North of Penhalonga are the Nyanga Mountains - the highest peaks in Zimbabwe. Fir trees, trout-streams, mist and bracken all combine to lend a hint of Scottish Highlands. The Troutbeck hotel is a great venue for a Day Trip from Penhalonga. Horses, Trout lakes, and a testing little 9-hole Golf course all ensure a day of activity, while the hotel serves Tea and cream Scones for the less energetic. On the way is the Inyangombe pools - a great site for a picnic by a crystal clear mountain stream, while the water is perfect swimming - for brass monkeys! Again, Nyanga is no more than an hour and a half from Penhalonga. Further South still, are the Chimanimani Mountains. These would be perfect to reach from Penmhalonga for visitors driving back to South Africa. Not only is it a great drive, but it affords the chance to continue on to the Ruined City at great Zimbabwe. Penhalonga really is a perfect springboard to Zim's Eastern Highlands!
