Lanseria Airport is a privately owned international airport conveniently situated in the north west of Johannesburg and close to Sandton.Currently it is used mostly for regional, corporate and diplomatic aircraft but can manage sizable aircraft such as the Boeing 757-300 and Airbus A319. Lanseria handles more take-offs and landings per year than any other airport in Africa although the amount of passengers is not nearly as high as OR Tambo International Airport. When Nelson Mandela was released from prison in May 1990, he was flown to Johannesburg. He stepped off the aircraft onto the tarmac at Lanseria – the first time he had set foot on Gauteng soil after 30 years!Lanseria International Airport complies with all the stringent standards set by International Civil Aviation Organisation – Immigration, Border Police (SAPS), SARS (Customs and Excise), Health, Nature Conservation, Agriculture, National Intelligence and Veterinarian Services. For the transportation of live animals, animal products and agricultural products, prior notification is required.
